'think wildflower at 8,000 ft' - June Lake Tri
Quote | Reply
Looking for feedback if anyone has done the June Lake tri before: http://highsierratri.org/course-description/

I'm considering driving up to do the half this year as mental prep for Tahoe. Course description sounds like a ball buster, I dig the run course description of "think Wildflower at 8,000 ft". If that doesn't trigger that sadistic part of you, then I don't know what will.

Looks beautiful, but have heard nothing about this race in the past, seems like it's relatively new, or that this might be the first year for the half course?

This is the first year for the half. Have not done the race proper, but been to June Lake several times and done a lot of S/B/R training in mammoth. Lots of friends have done the race and really enjoy it, and confirm that it is like WF at 8K feet.

Beautiful location, would think it would be great Tahoe training. Swimming at altitude is the toughest IMO.

Do it! I did the sprint last year. I had a great time. You couldn't pick a better spot for a swim. The lake is beautiful, and cold. The bike was great, that's where I gained time on the other participants. The run was great. It was relatively hilly with a mix of road and trail running. I recommend it for anyone who wants some exposure exertion at altitude. I live at 1500ft so I was sucking wind very heavily on the swim and was pushing my breathing limit the entire way to the line. They did have some crazy results gymnastics going on. Good thing the Garmin doesn't lie for my personal knowledge that I had the fastest bike split!!

It was a great race. Do it!

Thanks for the responses. After a quick check with my tri club it seems like we have a decent crew of Tahoe people all heading up for this.

Then, once I paged through some of the pictures on the website, it looks absolutely stunning. I love the mountains, although I'm not going to love what they do to my lungs.

These two were especially striking to me:

I'm about 99% sure I'm in for this now.
