"Hey Crowie, it's me, Macca..."
I hope everyone is excited as I am to watch the 2012 Ironman World Championships.

With all the stars of the sport in attendance, I could see Macca dusting off his Rolodex to try to line the kind of teamwork that worked for him in 2010. With Lance racing, Macca & co. will need to work together to a level never seen before in order to win....

I am still in total awe of Lance riding 2hrs (and change) at the Hawaii 70.3, especially considering he reportedly "trained through the race," completing a season-long 21 mi training run just a few days before the race...

If Lance can get 10-12 minutes on the rest of the field at the World Championships, it will put the best runners in the sport to the test to chase him down... And I for one think that if he has 10-12 minutes off the bike over the top runners, it will be OVER! Too big of a risk to let happen.

.......So I could see a voicemail message looking something like this:

"Hey Crowie, it's me, Macca.... Remember when I talked trash about your bike skills and teamed up against you in 2010. Well, can we let bygones be bygones? If we don't work together along with the Raelerts, McKenzie, Vanhoenacker, Lieto, Bennett, and co. we are going to look awesome ridiculous on live NBC broadcast if we let Juan Pelota go off the front. So, what do you say buddy ole' pal??? Let's work together on the bike and the truce will end once we start the run.... Deal??? Plus, I love your new Specialize bike, you look really aero... Cheers mate. Your BFF, Macca."

For my money, if Lance is gonna work with anyone, it's going to be Macca and vice versa.

Damn, you tricked me. I thought from the subject that maybe this thread wasn't about Lance. Wrong again.

Why would he work with Macca knowing that he can't run with him? Then again, I suppose the guys from 2010 didn't consider that either.

Macca needs a couple of minutes on the bike as well and will definitely not pull the runners pack. How could they actually work together, has Crawie ever had his face in the wind during an Ironman? Maybe he could shout supportive cheers, while Macca is pulling him.

Either he or Lance could profit only from a dedicated helper, althoug maybe riders able to pull lance are all enganged in pro teams.

That said, if Lance wants, he wins by any margin he likes.

this isn't nascar where you're on the "the same team" b/c you have the same bike sponsor. if Macca and Lance wanted to work together on the bike, I seriously doubt having different bike sponsors would stop them

Fairly certain he did his own work last year at Kona

If Specialized throws down and says "If Macca and Crowie can finish 1/2, they will get $1,000,000" then it might happen.
Come on Specialized. Step it Up.

I think even if LA happens to feel great in France he won't let it all out. He's gonna show up in Kona with enough questions about 'can he do it', no reason to let the cat out of the bag too early if he *knows* he can do it. If people are dead certain he will douche the run they will be more amenable to letting him go. If they see him drop a sub 3 in France there is no way in hell they will let him go w/o trying to burn some matches on the bike course.

I'm not sure Crowie will let anyone go... I think he'll play it like last year, keep close on the bike and go all out on the run. Whoever is there with him to help him on the bike will be a bonus. 2012 will be a great race, I just wish the Queen of Kona was racing too but I won't be surprised if Lance goes at it again next year and I hope CW joins in the fun too

Pretty much agree with your whole idea of getting mates, but the bolded part has me scratching my head a little. You really think if Lance has 10-12min off the bike, he will hold off Macca, Crowie, Raelert et al?

If he runs a 2:55 at Nice, then it will be doable.

If Lance works with anyone, it will be Lieto. They both know that they will need at least several minutes on the uber runners and working together will be in each of their best interest. Also, It doesn't hurt that they have the same bike sponsor.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Actually you raise a very interesting point. Do you think some like LA, IF he were in a winning position in France and knew it, would be cunning enough to shut it down and 'bonk' at 20 mile and let half a dozen run over him to whip up a frenzy? Or is the better option to smash it and have the others change their otherwise winning game plan out of panic?

Well.....I don't know if I'd go that far that he shuts it down and plays bonky so he takes 7th. I don't follow the points system, but I would assume he knows what place he needs to make a Kona slot. Any more effort than it takes to qualify is just showing more than you need IMO. Let's just play this one: he has a 15 minute lead, the victory is secure and he is feeling like King Kong with 8 miles to go. Why not play with peoples minds a bit? Stop and walk a 100 yards, stretch and do some extra 'oh man I'm hurtin' looks for the camera. Walk a couple of aid stations. Win by 5 minutes or something and people say 'but yea he looked like he was about to totally lose it on the last 10K he doesn't have what it takes since he walked some.'

Who knows maybe he really blows a gasket and is walking at mile 12.....it's all speculation til race day. BUT I do know he is a master tactician and knows whatever questions he can put in others minds on race day only tips the scale in his favor. What he has shown me in 5 races is an unreal upward trend that would not inspire me with confidence if I were his adversary. LOTS of elite/stud IM specialist pros in Kona are probably fearing they won't see the backside of a 41 year old until he walks up on stage for whatever place he takes.....which I think could be on the podium.

Agreed. Lieto could potentially get a bike course record and start his “run” in while Lance tries to hold off the crew chasing him down. An issue is Lieto’s health moving forward as Lance appears to be a notch above everyone bike wise, as one would expect, and teaming up may not net him the largest gap. When fit, Lieto has the chops to partner with Lance.

Considering a 70.3 has a 13.1 mile run, doing a 21 mile training run is not bad.

Dunno about tactics but I think Crowie would be to stay close to the bike and run like hell just like what he did last year. Of course lance would be a bit farther off than lieto was but would the time gap be enough to hold crowie and the rest to run him/them down? it would be fun to see the germans/aussies/americans teaming up and working together though.... can't wait for the race

Of the big(est) 3 (Crowie, Macca, Lance) I don't see Macca making an alliance with Crowie, or either of them with Lance. Macca wants to be the one to show up Lance. Crowie is a serious threat as Crowie is such a good runner, good enough to run down Lance even after a 10-15 minute slower bike. Also, Crowie and Macca seem much more hostile than friendly, in comparison to say Lance and Lieto. Lance may ally with Lieto, however, as both are such great cyclists, seem to be friends, both are Americans, etc. Lance out bikes, and runs, Lieto any day do I don't see Lieto having much of a chance.

If I was Macca, I wouldnt worry as much about not letting Lance get too far up, but rather staying far enough ahead of Crowie that Crowie can't catch Macca on the run. I don't see Lance running faster than 2:55 since he's new to IM, especially the marathon part in 90 degree Kona sun. Great field this year hopefully itll come down to the last 400m!
