Summer time training in Austin Texas??
My wife and I are thinking about moving to Austin in 2 1/2 years and I was wondering what people do training wise in the summer months. Is the heat brutal? Are there any good running trails that are mostly shaded with the occasional water stop? What time do people usually start out for the long weekend rides during the summer (80-100 miles).

The summers do get hot here. Actually, the average high temp has been 90+ for the last month. There have been times in the past few years where there is bad heat and 100+ many days in a row. It's OK though because this is great heat acclimation. I love the heat so I'm used to it by now and I actually train in the middle of the day a couple of times a week. Since I'm so used to the heat, I do really well at hot races compared to others. There is this great trail around the lake in the middle of town called Town Lake Trail. The local running store, RunTex, sets up 2 water stops for joggers and runners. There are a few other decent trails around town as well. My plan for weekend rides is to get out on the road early like at around 6am. It'll get hot towards the end of the ride, but I'm used to the heat so it doesn't bother me that badly. Make sure to bring some kind of electrolytes and cash on the rides to pick up fluids along the way. For a 100 mile ride, I drink abotu 2 bottles of fluid in the heat per hour so I would look really funny with 10 water bottles attached to my bike.

We have been down here for 2 years now but we moved from Oklahoma where the heat is just as bad plus you get to deal with 25mph winds day in and day out.

Honestly I don't find the heat to be a derrant to training here. I just keep in mind that I need to slow down a bit when running. I don't really notice the heat much while riding. The flip side is when 1/2 the country is freezing we are still riding in shorts.

Like mentioned Town Lake Trail is a great 10 mile loop. It can be crowded at time but it is kind of cool to see so many people out running. Off of that there is a quite a bit of nice single track running out the green belt and there are numerous trail opportunities withing a few miles. There is a great trail running series in the summer put on by Rouge Training. Steve Sission and his group put on 3 30k races.

agree with the others...for long summer bike rides and runs, you just have to start early. Lots of liquid and lots of sunscreen.

For running....there is a tradeoff...it's crazy humid in the mornings, but cooler. But in the evenings, though it's warmer (ok, hotter), the humidity is less. So you choose the lesser of two evils.
