Does the Y have a pool?

Yes
I guess that would be a requirement.

First, make sure your primary care doctor says you're healthy enough.

Then, swim. Get lessons to help your form and efficiency if need be. It doesn’t have to be perfect but the swim will spike your heart rate and can exhaust you quickly. People drown and die. A sprint tri is typically 750 meters - 15 pool laps. But open water has no lane ropes or pool walls to grab.

Everything else is secondary. Get a decent bike (doesn’t have to be a tri bike) and ride to build some endurance. Practice riding after swimming, running after riding, etc to get the feel.

Then pick an easy and nearby sprint tri, ideally with a pool swim.

Welcome! Are there any tri clubs in your area? They may have training groups and could be a good local source of information.

Pools in my area.
Pool across the street from the house but they are open Labor Day-Memorial Day. $375.00 per year.
