That’s a great point about turns. The fastest pool guy I know has really disgustingly fast turns and can just put meters on people on that. That’s some nice ow swimming. Getting out quick and finding the right line or a good marker to sight , like a tree or feature in the background. Very good race craft strategies
in the OW race I've done the past 3 septembers (and once before that but it wasn't held in 2020) the way the course works, the best line into the finish puts you very near some roots that stick way out into the water. The volunteers annoyingly try to steer me away from said roots, because they don't know any better, while I hold the line. One of the years I'll remember to tell them. I will say that this is a three lap race so the first time when they try to herd me away from the non-tangent line, my bad for not telling them beforehand that I Know Exactly What I Am Doing, but the second and third times... you'd think they'd figure it out. (it isn't a huge race - I think there were 40 people doing more than one lap).
I lost at least one place in a race in summer 2022 from not having scouted the line into the finish well enough so that isn't a mistake I make any more
maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
