Hwy 101 / PCH Swim Spots
Calling all Westcoast ST to help plan a road-trip down the PCH via Hwy101 this summer. Chime in here with your favorite swim spots!

We'll drive from Seattle to Irvine for the bittersweet purpose of taking our daughter to college. She'll be swimming for Concordia University and wants to arrive on campus with her feel for the water intact and ready to get to work with her new squad. We'll build our itinerary around places for a shake-out swim every other day or so.

Please share your favorite pools and open water locations along the way. Anything in proximity of Hwy 101 and the PCH is fair game, particularly open water options and outdoor pools.

Thanks!

Lake Sonoma is very swimmable, probably in the low 70s. Was the swim location of IM/70.3 Santa Rosa races.

San Francisco Bay swims are possible - either Aquatic Park, SF; or Berkeley Marina (solo, or with https://www.odysseyopenwater.com/)

If you end up near San Luis Obispo, the SLO swim center is a nice pool facility, walk-ins are welcome.
Avila Beach in that area is nice, can OW swim there.

Santa Barbara - Los Banos del Mar Pool - it's right off the beach, kind of fun.

If you're timing is right join the LA Tri Club on Friday morning's 6:30 ~1mi south of the Santa Monica Pier where Ocean Park Blvd hits the sand. We have 150-300 athletes in the water there every Friday with buoy's out, lifeguard on shore, and coach leading.

Verdugo Pool in Burbank is right off the 101 if you want to get in a swim just before getting to Irvine.

On the Southern Oregon Coast there are numerous lakes along the 101. I used to swim at Woahink Lake and Eel Lake (named for its shape not the animal). There’s also a 25 yard outdoor pool in Coos Bay at Mingus Park.
Woahink is cold but beautiful clear water, Eel lake is slightly warmer but not as clear. Both lakes have frequent open water swimmers in the summer but there some light boat traffic so bring a bouy.

It’s right off the 5 :)

Come swim here between 5:30am and 8:15am. After that it gets crowded during the summer with kids splash pool taking up the shallow end.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

When can you actually do public swim as a non-member in this pool?

Three beautiful facilities right there; California sure knows how to build a pool. Thanks!

I saw on the calendar lap swim hours (8-12:30) and the option to buy daily activity passes - I guess it requires more legwork than someone just dropping in for a swim on a trip to do but it appears similar to what I do at Heather Farms pool.

SLO Swim Center is nice, yes, but you'll share a lane. If you are rolling through town and want your own lane (you might be one of 3 people in the entire pool), I can get you in at Cal Poly Rec Center.

Better yet, hit up Avila Dolphins for some open water swimming. Swimmers are out there almost every day.

Your trip is short. Make the most of it.

Wow, that is quite the community oriented mindset; thank you!

As certified pool junkies, we’d be thrilled to jump into Cal Poly’s facility. That said, an OWS with the locals at Avila could be even better. Excited to have those choices!

I’ll DM you as we approach SLO and our plans develop.
