How to swim slower?
Noob swimmer here.

According to swimming zone calculators, my easy pace should be 2:30-2:49/100m, however, no matter how slow I try to swim, I can't swim that slow without using horrible form!

Swimming a 100m fresh and as relaxed and as slow as I can while using a 2-beat kick, I still end up swimming around 1:55. I only can go slower than 2:00 when I do repeats and my form starts breaking down bcus I'm getting so tired.

This is problematic because I can't go slow enough to swim more than 500m without getting gassed even if I'm really trying to stay super relaxed .

Does anyone else have this problem or know how to address it?

swim as slow as you can mantaining form

you can add other styles, or introduce drills

you may repeat the CS Test soon

Same advice: swim as easy as you can while maintaining nice style. Don't force slower because of a test.
If that nice-form pace is not sustainable over longer distances, then you need to work on what breaks down, possibly using some aids (pullboy against legs sinking, fins if breaking straight line, tuba if breathing throws you out,...)

You probably need to spend some time improving your body position.

The combination of the inability to swim slowly, the inability to sustain your swimming, and your performance level imply that you're unable to get relaxed in the water.

You're probably working to hard just to maintain your position in the water.

I wouldn't worry so much about trying to swim slowly, but you should have the ability to swim easily.

This should help.

some data from a practice I recently observed: The set was 24 x 100's descend 1-6 x 4 (since you are self-describe Noob, this means you go easy on the first one, go progressively harder so that by #6 you are going very hard. Then repeat that cycle for a total of 4 times)).

The kids who were breaking a minute on #6 were going 1:08-1:10 on the easy ones. So the delta between EASY and HARD was 10 - 12second per 100. If we convert that to a percentage, ~15-18%.

So to suggest a pace zone between 2:30 and 2:49 doesn't really make sense to me. I would think that 15% figure might be a little low for swimmers not highly trained but if you are going 1:55's and feeling easy I don't think going much slower than that has any benefit.

First, welcome to the triathlon community. I wish you all the best with your training and racing.

The biggest struggle in the triathlon community around the swim is triathletes try to take training structures from the bike and run that generally work and then apply them to the swim which doesn't work well.

I would never recommend an athlete who was starting out in the swim to hold a pace of 2:30-2:49/100m as their easy.

Swim at 1:55/100. Do a bunch of repeats with a little bit of rest between (about 20 seconds) and see how many you can hold at that pace. Focus on holding your technique together as you get tired. If you can't hold 100s at the start very long at 1:55/100 then do 75s, 50s or 25s. If you are still frustrated after that and don't feel like you are making progress, contact a coach.

Triathletes don't swim a lot for the skill they want to development. In swimming, consistency is king. So each time you get in the water to practice you'll need to try to build as much fitness and technique as possible in the same session. There shouldn't be much easy.

Again, good luck with your training and racing and if you have any other questions, please let me know.

This is the route I would take. It works for me as well.
