training/race wheels ~$500 200lb rider ???
I'm looking for a set of training/racing wheels in the $500 ballpark (street price, not MSRP). I weight 200lb. The bike will most likely be Campy-equipped (if it makes a difference).

Right now, I'm leaning toward the Campy Zondos. Was also eyeing the Campy Proton. But, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks.

Steve

Check Campy wheels from probikekit.com. For a little more you could have Eurus wheels. Pretty sweet deal, it seems the British have less restrictions on pricing than here in the States.

What would make the Protons a better choice than the Zondas?

It looks like they're not Campy compatible. Am I mis-reading?

maybe. But for only $199 on the wheelset, you can get one of those special cassette spacer kits (made by Mavic? or Wheels Manuf?) so you can have perfect campy shifting on the shimano hub. Or I have heard of folks just using the shimano cassette with campy shifting with no trouble. I think with 9 speed it worked perfectly...not sure how well the 10sp version setup works.

I think on the higher priced Rol Wheels a campy hub option is available. They do custom wheels, so call 'em & ask.

I completely missed the training and racing part. I thought just for training. The reason I suggested the Protons over the Zonda's is 1. They are $100 cheaper. 2. They have more spokes, theoretically making them more durable. At 200 lbs, about what I am too, we need all the durability we can get.

So, now that I see you want a dual setup, the Zonda's are getting good reviews on RBR.com, so if you are only getting one set, these might fit the bill. Another choice is the Mavic Ksyrium Elite, which I ride almost everyday with no problems.

If you are 200 lbs, I would recommend that you consider something more durable. I'm in that weight range myself, and I have beaten the hell out of my Mavic Ksyriums, and they are still true and ride great. A rare combination of light weight and durability.

You would have to look for a used pair, however, and even then $500 might be a little low. I assume you mean $500 for both wheels?

I don't know anything about Rols, but they appear similiar in concept and design to Neuvation. Neuvations are bombproof and available in Campy compatible.
