Did anyone see the Kayaker at IMAZ get caught in the middle of the swim start? Somebody should have dunked him!

Yah...what an idiot. Everyone knows that kayaks belong on land and triathletes have taken ownership of every body of water.

Just pulling your chain.

Yeah! Let's get those god damn fish out of the water for the next race as well. Just knowing they're in there somewhere screws up my rhythm.

Yea...thanks dude - thats cool.

Even though I am not the one you are talking about:
I happened to come all the way out to AZ to volunteer for you guys (I was actually in the Kayak as well - but I was the one DUNKED by someone who could NOT swim at the very start!)

We were out there at 5am for you guys - for FREE

I'm not even certified lifeguard, but they were short on peeps - and since I can swim, I volunteered... guess I'll stay on land next time.

Hey Welding Iron,

Thanks for coming out.

You and the rest of the volunteers did an excellent job!!

I'm sure most of the people who raced will agree with me.

Were you the one that they showed on the Volunteer footage going in? Seriously, you got dunked and came up out of the water with hands in the air and a smile on your face!! Doesn't get any better than that!! Thanks for volunteering. Even though you are an idiot because you got in that guys way when he was trying to sink to the bottom of the lake....... Thanks again for helping out.

Finally regular. Went to Urgent Care begging for an IV yesterday and they would not give me one. Unbelievable. So, I chugged a gallon of cranberry juice and about a gallon of water in an hour and a half and everything is a lot better today. Still nursing the third degree burns on my back. One more pointer for your first IM.....don't go to a sun block volunteer that has the spray bottles. They have no idea where the sunblock hits because they can not see it plus the wind blows a lot of it away. Also, don't forget your lower back!!!! Great to meet you big guy. Good luck with your training.

Dude, what happened with the urinating??? I have the same birght, red, painful crescents on my back from where the sunblock was noticably absent for 12 hours. Still hurts today, but not as bad as yesterday and the day before. Couldn't sleep on monday night, but serves me well for not putting my own on too.

I went 23.5 hours without peeing. Went at 1:30pm Sunday and did not go again until 1pm after the banquet. I went to the medical tent after the race and they refused to give me an IV even though I was a wreck. Finally made it home and I was down 13 pounds!!! Drank and drank and finally went Monday at 1pm but really could not get another one going for awhile. Went to Urgent Care yesterday and begged them for an IV just to catch up and he refused as well. Told me I didn't look dehydrated even though my skin was white, my lips were cracked and I could have knitted a sweater with my spit. I told him that I have been training for IM for three years and that I know when I am low on fluids and that I have not been able to catch up because I was napping a lot but he told me that he thought that I had potential kidney failure and sent me on my way. Great experience to say the least. Would have rather spent the $25 copay on a couple cases of beer!!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but -

He told you that you might have potential kidney failure and released you?!?!?! That is just nuts, to say the least.

I can't imagine not going for that long, I had the exact opposite problem. Every time I started to run/shuffle I had to urinate, badly. And each time I did I was expecting to overflow the porto-john because the urge was so strong, instead I don't think I could have filled a shot glass. Weird.

Hope you are feeling better now, at least enough to get some beer in you. You know, it IS a good recovery drink, if you have just one. :)

It was great meeting you as well. I learned a lot this past weekend so hopefully I'll have a great first IM come Florida in November.

Lol, yup- that was me!

I havn't seen the DVD yet...but I felt bad for the guy - he really couldn't swim, he musta known it was a 2.4 mile swim he had to do??

I told him to hang on to the front of the boat, but he panicked and wanted to get IN the kayak... so, over we went.

lol

I've heard it said by doctor types, that if you can drink you shouldn't get an IV. I don't remember the specifics, but at the time it made lots of sense.

Tim Noakes has a chapter about it in the lore of runningm apparently he is the medical director and has almost completely stopped giving IV's and gets good results. You'd have to look up the chapter for the specifics.

But it sounds like you got it right once were awake long enough to drink some serious liquids.

Interesting responses I've received both public and privately. I guess I need to provide some clarification. The context of this was to poke fun at my buddy who like myself was volenteering and happened to by the kayaker who got caught in the middle trying to hold the swim line at Mike Rileys requested. BTW- We had a blast helping swimmers for 2+ hours and eveyone one of you were nice and greatful for the support. As an IMer myself it was a great/fun perspective to watch the race. I would strongly recommend for those who have the opportunity.

I certainly appreciate every one who was out on each course. Like it has been said before, with out them there is no race. For those of you who raced and got the ASI pictures you can see the kayak in the middle of the swimmers. It was probably not the most fun place to be. And I really can't beleive the kayak being there was much of an issue. If your race can be ruined in the first 10 meters of the swim, it is not going to be a good race.

Thanks to all who helped.
