Do you want your shifters in your hands, so that you don't move at all to shift (your first finger or two are always around the shifter, even when not shifting), or do you want them just beyond your hands, where you have to reach a bit to shift (your fingers are around the bars when not shifting)?

Optimally, when in the "pistol grip position", your thumb should be very close to, or on the shifter, but not extend beyond it.
