Car Driving Characteristics With Roof Racks
Quote | Reply
OK, this is my third car with roof racks but for some reason I feel the car is driving very strange due to the new aerodynamics of the car with the roof rack installed. Of course I should expect some additional wind noise but on my new car I've noticed a weird shake as well. I can feel tiny vibration through the steering wheel, maybe this should be expected but I don't remember this from my previous two cars. It seems that there is some sort of harmonic vibration going on up there and I'm not sure how to fix it? I did recently install a fairing, which helped some, but the "shake" is still noticeable.

Not sure what kind of set-up you have, but if you can adjust the spread between the front and the rear bars, playing around with that might help.

Make sure you car wheels are properly balanced first, I don't think a roof rack would cause all that vibration.

Good luck.

Good point, but I started noticing it right after installing the racks. FWIW, my wife thinks its all in my head??

Yeah... I'm with dcvelo... I'm no engineer, but vibrations in the steering wheel come from the road/tires/wheels.
