Race/training nutrition - so overwhelming. What's the latest? r/o

History: I've been doing Ironmans since 1999. I used to pay a lot of attention to nutrition, but lately I've been much more of a hobby triathlete than a serious athlete, and I'd just sorta wing it.

Signed up for some serious races this year (mostly ultrarunning and mountain biking, with an ironman thrown in for fun) And I'm trying to get back to a more 'real' fueling/hydration strategy, but just browsing through products - everything has changed so much!! I mean, it used to be you could use Powerbars and Gatorade. Then this new stuff, called 'Gu' came out. Seriously, I feel so old right now, lol.

In the past I've worked with a few different nutritionists, but even they gave very different advice. It seems like there are now so many different strategies for fueling, I don't even know where to begin.

I do have some stomach issues, especially in the run. Some people recommend 'natural, real foods than are fruit based' and others say avoid fructose. This is just one example. My REI nutrition selection is beginning to resemble an aisle at Whole Foods!

Where do I even start?

Thanks!

powerbars, powergels, gatorade and coke still work fine for the vast majority of athletes. unless they give you issues, I'd stick with them

If they do not work for you are give you issues, I would try EFS, I know I had issues with Powergels and GU, and do not get them with EFS. EFS is also higher in electolytes than most, so if you need the extra electolytes it is a good way to go. You really do not need salt tabs if you use it.

it all really depends on you

age, genetics, gut bacteria, food timing, metabolism
its such a big subject that its become almost pointless asking on forums. We are all different and all have unique opinions.

I have found the most important thing to find are products that use maltodextrin as their primary source of carbs (GU, first endurance). Simple sugars as the primary source of carbs is a recipe for stomach issues.

I know it's a bit late, but I made a webinar talking about nutrition from an athlete perspective.

Get your popcorn and enjoy!
