Who Gonna Buy Garmin Varia Vision for $199
Quote | Reply
With Garmin now offering its Varia Vision HUD for $199, who is buying?

THE BIG QUESTIONS:

  1. For those running glasses, how much DRAG does this thing add?
  2. For those running a helmet w/ visor, can this thing be rigged up to sit INSIDE your visor?
  3. If the answer to 2 is NO, then how much DRAG does this thing add?

Where do you see it for $199? I checked 3 sites (including garmin.com) and all have it still at $399

I had big hopes of being able to use them for TT and maybe put them inside the Aerohead. The problem is the screen has a very limited field of view. I can't even use them very well with glasses because the screen has to be position "just so" and the movement of even a bit with glasses puts you outside the viewable range. No chance of getting it to sit inside the shield of an aero helmet and finding the sweet spot. There just isn't enough adjustability to the tiny screen. Maybe a V2 will work, but V1 doesn't get it done.

This was my first thought as well. Garmin doesn't discount stuff unless they're clearing it out in advance of introducing something new.

I think the Everysight cycling hmd is starting to ship later this month - a product along similar lines but not from Garmin.

Hello grumpier.mike and All,

The Aerohead shield sits inside the helmet about 1/2 to 5/8 inch all around.

If you mount the the shield flush or on top of the exterior of the helmet there is enough room inside for glasses and the Varia.

You can try it by using tape to fasten the shield to the exterior of the helmet and see if your glasses fit OK.

Fitted flush the visor might even be faster ..... and taping the gaps should help too.

Cheers, Neal
