I grew in Aspen (home of Maroon Bells) and there was little dust up in the late 80s when some Utah product (I think it was milk) was being advertised as "from the mountains of Utah" or some such angle, and they used a pic of The Bells. At one time I remember hearing it was the most photographed mountain in North America - but that could have been just Aspen marketing hype (we did our fair share of that).

On another note - In 2003 I did this Mountain Extreme Triathlon out of the Jordanelle Res. The mountain bike course was tough (I think my bike split was 9+ hrs). Winner went over 15 hours. That race was a one-and-done with maybe 40 people in it.

I'm excited for new/weird/gravel tris in the future. Also very important to me - the values of the people behind the race.

Ian,

You seem to have an interest in races like these and I like that. I would contact the race director and get involved in any capacity.

I don't see him doing this for the right reason right now, and someone like you might be able to get him on track. I WANT something like this...

The VT venue looks spectacular. A legit race could get a lot of traction. Heck, Dan...here is a good spot for a full gravel Ironman distance with some insane running.
Get to it!

I saw the news on the race announcement as well.

I personally know some of the people helping with the organization of the event and they are truly in it for the love of the sport. As for James, I have never met him and can't really guess what his motives are.

I like the concept, but it's VERY no frills, even lacking basics.
No timing.
No traffic control = huge safety and liability issue in my eyes.
Hopefully they have scuba teams for the swim for safety.

This would be better applied to a sprint or olympic distance and build upon that. I'm curious to see how it plays out.
