Do wrist-based HR watches also work with a strap?
Can't find this question in previous posts, so is it possible to use something like a Garmin vivoactive3, or a similar watch WITH a strap? Asking for my wife who needs to replace a flaky Polar and is adamant about having the most accurate readings at all times.

And if the answer is yes, any recommendations on brands or protocols or anything like that?

Yes for for example the Garmin FR935. As long as the strap is ANT+, and only during activities, so not for the continuous HR monitoring it does.

The wrist-based HRM is still fluctuates far more than a chest strap. I've used Garmin straps over the years - they do eventually wear out and stop working, but other than not being very accurate when dry (generally at the start of a cold-weather run) they have all been very accurate for me.

I guess the one thing I do like about the newer watches with the optical sensor is the fact that you still have some data if you happen to forget your strap or the battery in the strap dies.

I know my wife doesn't like a chest strap - it chafes her. She's content with the inaccuracy of the wrist based HR on her 225.

Unless, of course, you live in the frozen tundra, like I do, and you wear 4 layers of long sleeves 3 months of the year...

My vivoactive HR automatically detects and uses a garmin chest strap.

Great thanks all. It's looking like a Polar A370 might fit the bill - she doesn't need GPS or anything fancy schmancy, just pure HR, maybe a stop watch, and structured workouts would be a kicker. Polar website indicates it can work with a strap.
