A question for the girls: cold-weather clothing
Quote | Reply
I have a question that maybe one of the girls could help me with.

We live in Texas where cold weather is not a problem, but we're traveling tomorrow to chillly Rhode Island for the Cyclocross National Championships where there will be snow and it won't get over 35F degrees.

Last night I bought my daughter some Under Armor cold weather base layers and when we got her clothing together and tried everything one we encountered a problem.

When it's cold in her mountain bike races she just puts some Pearl Izumi tights on over her shorts. Most of the time she doesn't have to dismount in a MTB race because she's so light she floats over the muddy stuff and can climb what most people have to walk, so tights catching on her saddle while dismounting or mounting is not an issue.

In a CX race, however, because of the frequent dismounting and mounting we thought tights would be a potential problem (catching on the saddle while she dismounted or mounted the bike).

Because of that she planned to wear her base-layer leggings and then her shorts and leg-warmers over them but that's where the problem arose: the base-layer leggings have a seam running down the center. She had to wear panties to not be bothered by the seam but it was a little uncomfortable with them on under leggings and shorts.

Any other suggestions?

sometimes i wear my tights UNDER my shorts...that could solve the mount/dismount problem i think. im from MA so im half-immune to the cold. however if she was still chilly she could do tights, then shorts, then legwarmers over the tights. this would eliminate the seam issue too i think.

how about trying those underwear-chamois things under the tights, and then bike shorts over? actually, I don't know why tights on top would be any different than bike shorts, in terms of catching on the saddle.

or, you could try a neoprene saddle cover, that might eliminate the tights catching problem.

ok, i'm not a girl but here's my 2 cents..

How about just Leg Warmers which would just tuck a few inches under the shorts. Or maybe just use a pair of padded poly-pro biking pants and do without the shorts.

As I said in my post, she uses leg-warmers but because it will be in the 20's to 30's with possible snow she needs the base layer as well.

I have worn tights under my bike shorts without panties. I also have one pair on warm bike tights that I wear alone. They fit really well and don't get caught on my saddle. I do have a problem with some of shorts getting caught because the are too big. Even some small and x-smalls just don't fit me right. I l now live near Charleston, SC and rarly use cold weather gear, but I am very warm natured and only wear tights if below 25.
