I would love to buy a smart trainer but I am not at all convinced due to some people's complaints with ERG mode. Are there any demo events? I would love to try one for a session or two before buying one.

A lot of Tri/bike shops around here (PDX) have trainers out on display. No clue if they'd let you mount up.
There may also be a place that has classes that you can try. There is a studio here with a bunch of computrainers. It will at least give you a feel for how they work, even if you don't end up with a CT.
Otherwise, if you are plugged in with other people in your area, ask around. I'm sure someone would let you give it a try.
