St Anthony's Tri

I am doing the St Anthony's Tri in St Petersburg in April. The website doesn't give much info on the course. Anybody done it and care to describe layout? JH

1 loop swim around the bay (different start & finish point), bike course is super flat with several out and backs and lots of turns (and lots of people)...run is out and back along the water and in a nice neighborhood. transition area is a big grass/sand field. good course...hope that you're in one of the first waves though to minimize bike congestion

What ncrunner said. VERY easy course - but way too crowded for me. About 20 different wave starts for the swim. Run is on Snell island (nice homes), but extremely crowded, especially if team in training is there again (they usually number about 500 strong).

as my dad said watching...it's like a big purple monster (meaning no disrespect...i fully support their efforts). defenitely way too crowded out on the course making it hard to really push hard on the bike when you have to worry the whole time about drafting. the main reason i'm choosing powerman nc instead this year. from my experience it's a very well run race. if you can, go through registration on friday evening as there was no line at all for me then and it was very long on saturday

Here is my race report from last year:

BTW, it is very long. Sorry.

Watch out for the wind. Also, it can be hot and humid in April in Tampa. Great race if are in one of the front waves. The bike starts and ends on cobblestones. Practice your corners because every corner I went into I would pass anywhere between 1-6 people just because I know how to take corners fast and keep up my speed. Watch out for drafters, too.

GO TEAM!

I will be wearing the Purple Jersey this year. You can not consider yourself a triathlete until you have raced one with TIT's.

I believe a PR is possible, depending on where you are, PR-wise. In 2004, it was a wetsuit swim, combined with saltwater boyancy, I got out of the water fast. The bike is flat and kinda technical, but from my viewpoint in the middle of the pack, the effect of the numbers and the newbies was minimal. It was unusually hot, though, and I cramped up and walked a lot of the run, ending my PR hopes.

Be careful on the swim. The first leg of the swim brings you right into the sunrise which was blinding during my wave last year. Several swimmers took the left at the wrong buoy and swam about 5 minutes before they realized what happenned. They had to swim back to where they exited the real course and continue on from there. Don't just follow the feet infront of you. Be sure to make that turn at the proper buoy. It was difficult to see because of the sun. The bike course has lots of turns and a section through a park that has speed bumps. Just be aware of those bumps. I heard more than rider fell while going over these last year. There are signs up warning the traffic of the oncomong speedbumps. Make sure everything on your bike is tight. The speedbumps, cobbles and some potholes made for a very interesting ride, especially on a crowded course. Watch out for drafters. Don't be surprised to see a paceline or two.
