Any urologists or nephrologists in the house?
Or anyone else who wants to chime in on my kidneys and urine?

So today i went for a 15 mile run. Had a bit of back pain, not bad, figured it would loosen up a bit when i warmed up. It didnt. At mile 10, i stopped to pee on a tree and noticed to my horror a stream of blood. I was on a trail 5 miles from home so after a quick assessment i decided to just run home. Once there, i told the ms and we hopped in the car to the er. A bit more pain started setting in and the urine sample i gave the nurse made her eyes widen. A ct scan confirmed kidney stones. Just a couple small ones. 1mm.

This is the 4th time ive had them. Never presented this way though. In the past, i discovered them when it suddenly felt like someone was thrusting a spear into my back and there was never any visible blood in my urine. No way i would have been able to run in that amount of pain.

Yes i drink a ton of fluids. I brought 36 ounces with me on my run today, drank it all, and it wasnt very hot. (1 bottle of nuun and one of water)

I have to schedule a follow up with a urologist. Im just wondering why the hell i get so many of these and how long after i pass them is it safe to run?

After breaking my knuckles last week, and now this, i must have really pissed off karma or lady luck.

so sorry! that sounds scary.

laid up myself with a 4mm kidney stone right now. we were in a cabin out of cellphone range.

the doctor told me, that diet change might be needed. we will find out once they test the stone.

tea, kale, spinach, nuts, beans, beets, dates, chocolate, etc can be a factor because of their oxalate content. i looked at the list of high oxalate foods and i eat a lot of them.

here is one list i found.

Why are they being formed? (These are questions for the Dr.)

Urine Specific Gravity is probably ok (given your mention of water consumption).

You're probably not obese (Given the 15 mile run).

How much calcium in your diet? (Could be high with sports supplements etc)

Fasting Glucose? (If elevated, correct that).

Urine pH? Probably not too high given the vegan diet, but you never know.

Bicarbonate and Citrate can both increase urine pH which may be helpful in mitigating the formation of kidney stones.

Why do you feel you need an electrolyte drink for a 15 mile run?
