My N=1

When I am in good shape, my resting HR is like 45. Standing up fast it goes to like 60/65 and I feel woozy.

When I am out of shape, my resting HR is like 55. Standing up it goes up to 65/70. Feel great.

So a really fast predictor of how good of shape I am in is to stand up fast and see how woozy I feel ;)

Had some heart tests a while back for something else, and given a healthy ticker.. so no signs it is anything except an endurance athlete annoyance.

Oh, I can't claim any credit :-)

The Eastern Europeans were using orthostatic tests as a marker of overtraining before HRV came on the scene. Check out the chapter by Csajkowski in "Exercise & Sports Biology" (Editor: Komi) for a really good primer on using orthostatic testing in this manner.

HRV has really taken the spotlight of late (& I'm a big fan of that too) but, as a starter, simple orthostatic testing can offer similar insight and is often a bit easier to implement/analyze.

Either way, definitely worth a couple of minutes each morning IMHO.
