SBR: Supported activities / DIY AG treadmill?
I call myself a lazy triathlete and I say that freely. The reaction I get "oh no you're not at all" or some comment to the contrary.

But I am and the reason is "supported activity" vs not.

-Swimming you are fully, 100% supported
-Biking you are mostly supported. Including the recent thread to sit or stand while climbing. Personally I like to stand for the simple reason when are you going to stand?

Then comes of course running. 100% unsupported and then some due to g's. And here's where lazy kicks-in. And injuries.
I'd skate or in-line 10k's all day long over having to run one, given the choice if there were one.

So that leads me to the Anti-gravity treadmill. Great idea but holy what a contraption. It makes sense to run more often and not blow out your lower legs so much. I think running is a hugely beneficial activity, more than swim and bike combined to be honest. Yet my group of friends zero are running due to injury, and it has taken me 5 years of dedication to be able to clear a10K. I can finally do it.

Has anyone thought of a simple bungie harness to a ceiling hook w/conventional treadmill?

Wow I can see all kinds of wrong that could happen there.

Of course you would loose one of the main benefits to your body of running, and that is building bone mass. Without any impact your bone mass (Strength) will not increase.

What I am going to say now a number of people will debate, but if you are a heel striker, switching to a mid/fore foot strike will demolish your calves at first, but overall it helps the knees, back, and hips.

Assuming that you can make it safe (and that is a BIG assumption), the decreased load due to the support of the bungee would mean the running would get a lot easier. Which means you will get far less fitness benefit ...

Hello SharkFM and All,

Perhaps more appealing to a Shark ........... an underwater treadmill might fill the bill.

Shark def loves water & has no legs...or arms.

That's a pretty good idea though. You can get non-powered treadmills dirt cheap tho. Sink one in the lake.

I guess what's in the back of my mind is our supporting device for slalom water-skiing. We created this slide-able bungie harness that takes a load off the arms and shoulders. I designed while on vacation in a club med.

What I found was you only need to pull a few pounds like 10-15% to make huge difference. So say my body weight is 175lbs, my theory is I just need to support 15-20lbs of that and it will feel like I am floating on air.

I do water running of sorts already surfing. I run until can't make progress then jump on the board & paddle out. There are good things about that but it's a dramatic change in cadence vs land-based. It's like running in a dream you want to move but your legs are in quicksand. It would be better with an underwater treadmill, but that would be my concern with the water-mill experience.

Or:

Let's say that you go to an army surplus store and buy one 3-meter (about 10-foot) balloon. It can hold:
4/3 x pi x 150 x 150 x 150 = 14,137,000 cubic centimeters = 14,137 liters

At one gram per liter of lift force ...... that's about 30 pounds of lift .... hook it to your belt and you are good to go on your treadmill without the water resistance .... inside (with a high ceiling) or outside ..... maybe there is a market for that product?

The balloons would be kinda fun in a gym for a pullup assist.

(Possibly dangerous as somebody could get tanked and hook up 4 of them to their girlfriend and create a crisis.)

why?

So that you cripple yourself if you race for real?

No thanks, I prefer the adaptive and multiple benefits provided by weight bearing exercise any day.

Ask an astronaut how crappy they feel without gravity.

I made a system tonite and ran it up to 10 mph. Pretty cool actually. Will try it again tomorrow. Took me an hour to make.

It's kind of like being slightly supported by a bike seat. (Biking you are turning over with way more support). I have a waist belt with two straps that crossover under the pelvis. That belt is supported by "suspenders" connected to a short by stout bungie mounted to the Sky Hook.

You can run up against the tethering - this has the ~sensation of running in water. So the more you move ahead against the "Sky Hook" the more lift you get.
I think my run form was way better.

What's cool about it is - it answers the question - what does 10lbs less body weight feel like? It feels pretty damn good!
