There are many different ways of measuring "success". And having class is an entirely different matter. Everybody knows that Kid Rock is an alcohol fueled hothead with multiple assault and other charges against him, Ted Nugent is an extreme right wing gun kook and Sarah Palin is just plain fucking stupid. Personally, I wouldn't want to sit down for a meal with any of them including Trump. Would have much rather enjoyed dining with Obama and Spielberg?

Charges or convictions? I know of two charges. One for pushing a DJ at a strip club and one for his entire crew at a Waffle House.

Jay was even shot three times while growing up.

       Amazing how alike Obama and Trump are, IMO both are dirt-bags. No interest in most of the others, but I'll have dinner with Nugent and Spielberg. Would be interesting to see if they would set aside their diametric opposition overall, and take the moment to chat, with their best efforts at a middle ground.

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but yes, I think there still is respect for the office, though I think it's eroding and that fact makes me a little sad.

I wasn't around when Nixon was President and did not pay much attention until Clinton. His actions in the Whitehouse (where he disrespected the office) seemed to ignite a lot of anger towards the office. The Bush administration continued this with their wars and a lot of anger was directed towards him. With Obama, I saw more personal hatred than any other President. When the Tea Party started making noise, some of the language and anger directed at Obama was scary. Now with Trump, things continue to be bad. Trump's language during the campaign and some of his comments since really make it hard to respect him and the office he holds.

I think Clinton was really bad for the image of President. In terms of personal behavior, I give high marks to both Bush and Obama for how they handled themselves in office (policies aside). I've never understood why there was so much personal hatred towards those 2 to be honest.

Likewise. I spend time at gun ranges, where I think it's fair to say the demographic generally skews conservative. Some of the stuff I heard at ranges in both Florida and Massachusetts during the Obama administration was incredibly abusive, offensive and openly, physically hostile. Most of it I'm sure was people just blowing off steam and talking tough, but there were a couple times when I briefly considered whether I needed to report stuff to the authorities.

Trump is definitely testing my ability to maintain the distinction between respect for the office of the presidency and respect (or lack thereof) for the individual currently holding that office. I think it's an important distinction to make, but I do sometimes wonder if the election of such a person can't help but tarnish the office in some ways.
