Kid Rock is an alright dude. Uncle Ted is fine as long as he takes his meds. Palin on the other hand...well she did have a reality show!

I would have liked to have seen all three of them dress a little more formally out of respect for the office and residence of the Presidency. Coat and tie for the men, leave the hats at home or at least remove them inside. Palin, I don't know what exactly I'd like to see, just not something that looks like she's meeting some of her girlfriends at Chili's for happy hour.

This post is one of many signals that I'm moving steadily down the road toward grumpy old man.

I agree with your first paragraph. I disagree with your final sentence. Proper decorum should not be tied to age.

This is about the only way Palin was ever getting in the White House.

I couldn't quite figure out how to describe it, but that is pretty damn good.

Walking around the White House mocking pictures is something you didn't even do in high school when you went to someone's house for a party.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Even when Bill Clinton was getting blown in the Oval Office, the respect for the Office (stains and all) was still maintained.

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but yes, I think there still is respect for the office, though I think it's eroding and that fact makes me a little sad. A few years ago I was in DC for work and was eating lunch at a table next to a family all dressed in their Sunday best. We got to chatting and it turned out they were dressed up because they were going to go take a tour of the White House later and wanted to show some respect. This was in August, it was blazing hot and humid, nobody in their right mind would be wearing that if they wanted to be comfortable. I certainly don't think tourists need to get dressed up to tour the White House, but I found it endearing and encouraging that this family was doing so.

We wanted to keep coming back to the houses the let us hang out.

I can still remember the one mom coming down screaming because someone had knocked something off the wall and broke it. I'm not sure what she expected when she let 20 or 30 high school kids get drunk in her house.

Once had a conversation with a co-worked the Monday after a weekend party that my then high school-age daughter threw for her friends. I had just told him that my kid had a party that weekend. He asked, "Boys? DId something get broken?" I told him it was mostly girls, and he then asked, "DId someone go home crying?" Answer was yes.

Success is not a measure of decency. By most measures, Hillary Clinton herself is wildly successful and most certainly way more successful than I'll ever be. She's still a twat. And so is Palin. They are free to act like uncultured morons in the White House just like we are free to mock them for it, right? I'm sure there are millions of supporters out there celebrating her offensiveness just like there are a half dozen of us on here bemoaning the loss of respect for the office/residence/whatever.

No, because they dressed the part and didn't take idiotic pictures showing themselves to be tabloid entertainers like these clowns. In other words, they showed respect - which is the point of this discussion.

Reminds me of the exchange at the end of Ocean's 11:

"Ted Nugent called - he wants his shirt back."

"Trump hosted Kid Rock, Ted Nugent and Sarah Palin [over] for supper." Past tense, and you already have your action verb so 'hosting them over for supper' is poor grammar.

Must of been some really intelligent conversation.

*Have. The word you're looking for is have.

He had Steven Spielberg over dinner at the white house.
That's called cannibalism. Hopefully Obama had Spielberg over for dinner. Also you capitalize White House, it's a proper noun.

Clean shit up a bit before you mock other people's intelligence.

There are many different ways of measuring "success". And having class is an entirely different matter. Everybody knows that Kid Rock is an alcohol fueled hothead with multiple assault and other charges against him, Ted Nugent is an extreme right wing gun kook and Sarah Palin is just plain fucking stupid. Personally, I wouldn't want to sit down for a meal with any of them including Trump. Would have much rather enjoyed dining with Obama and Spielberg?

Charges or convictions? I know of two charges. One for pushing a DJ at a strip club and one for his entire crew at a Waffle House.

He's been a bit calmer in the past decade, but he's obviously been a bit of an idiot. From google:

"In both March 1991 and September 1997, Rock faced misdemeanor charges stemming from alcohol-related arrests in Michigan.[39]
In February 2005, Rock was charged with assault on DJ Jay Campos in 'Christies Cabaret' strip club. He pleaded no contest and was sued for $575,000 by Campos.[40] Rock was charged with assault on Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee at MTV's 2007 Video Music Awards, he pleaded guilty.[41] In October 2007, Rock was involved in a brawl at a Waffle House in Atlanta, Georgia and charged with simple battery.[42][43] He pleaded nolo contendere ("no contest") to one count, was fined $1,000, required to perform 80 hours of community service and complete a six-hour course on anger management.[44]"

Ok. Were you equally outraged by Obama's guest? Of course, I think it is great both Kid Rock and Jay Z were able to turn their lives around and become contributing members of society. But, I live in an ivory tower like you, so ...

Before making it big, Jay-Z was a crack dealer in Brooklyn at the age of 13. During an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009, he called drug dealers in Brooklyn his “role models” growing up.He also has a history of violence. When he was 12, he shot his 16-year-old brother and he stabbed a record producer in December 1999. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation for the assault. Jay was even shot three times while growing up.

No shit. For Donkeys like you, past criminal activity is completely irrelevant -- so long as the person is of the "correct" political persuasion. It's a special kinda lens through which you see the world while cluck-clucking about who/what acceptable and not.

I know your comment is tongue in cheek, but yes, I think there still is respect for the office, though I think it's eroding and that fact makes me a little sad.

My comment wasn't really tongue in cheek, I think it was a legitimate question. I know that there is some respect for the office but I agree, it is really eroding and getting worse.

I wasn't around when Nixon was President and did not pay much attention until Clinton. His actions in the Whitehouse (where he disrespected the office) seemed to ignite a lot of anger towards the office. The Bush administration continued this with their wars and a lot of anger was directed towards him. With Obama, I saw more personal hatred than any other President. When the Tea Party started making noise, some of the language and anger directed at Obama was scary. Now with Trump, things continue to be bad. Trump's language during the campaign and some of his comments since really make it hard to respect him and the office he holds.

I think Clinton was really bad for the image of President. In terms of personal behavior, I give high marks to both Bush and Obama for how they handled themselves in office (policies aside). I've never understood why there was so much personal hatred towards those 2 to be honest.

Likewise. I spend time at gun ranges, where I think it's fair to say the demographic generally skews conservative. Some of the stuff I heard at ranges in both Florida and Massachusetts during the Obama administration was incredibly abusive, offensive and openly, physically hostile. Most of it I'm sure was people just blowing off steam and talking tough, but there were a couple times when I briefly considered whether I needed to report stuff to the authorities.

<<In terms of personal behavior, I give high marks to both Bush and Obama for how they handled themselves in office (policies aside). I've never understood why there was so much personal hatred towards those 2 to be honest.>>

Agreed.

<<Trump's language during the campaign and some of his comments since really make it hard to respect him and the office he holds. >>

Trump is definitely testing my ability to maintain the distinction between respect for the office of the presidency and respect (or lack thereof) for the individual currently holding that office. I think it's an important distinction to make, but I do sometimes wonder if the election of such a person can't help but tarnish the office in some ways.
