Experience with ab strain and running?
This sort of slowly came on without any identified cause, at the start of a run had tightness in lower abdominal just above and to the right of the pubic bone, for about 30 seconds, then would loosen up (I guess) and not be an issue during the run. After the tun it would be sore. Get maximum triggering if I try a double leg left, less so doing a crunch style move. Tried running through but that was, as usual, a fool's errand and it just got worse.

When it is sore, I also feel it during the catch portion of my swim stroke as my arm passes by the hip area, and during flip turns. Swimming doesn't seem to aggravate it though.

Rested for about a week and tried a short run and it wasn't having it. Took another two full weeks and ran easy last night. Today it's back to being sore. Been doing mostly elliptical during the off period as I have Oceanside in about 10 days, then nothing until September

I've been to my MAT guy for hip flexor work, over the course of a few weeks did not help. Went to sports PT, he ruled out a hernia. He believes it's an ab strain. Gave me exercises etc to help try to break up any scar tissue, he noted that soft tissue injury is usually a 12 or so week process to fully heal, so it may just be a need to suck it up.

Thoughts, advice, experiences with anything similar? Searched the archives but haven't found anything too recent. It's just frustrating that it's not a "real" running injury and just seems so random

Sounds like a cronic and potentially life ending case of O.L.D.

I am still battling similar issues almost 8 months now. I trained through it for 2016 IMAZ. Post IMAZ, I could run but it was progressively getting worse post run. So I looked for deeper eval. The end result is something that I don't think you wish to hear and it really means nothing to you as we are all different. I will give you my progression of symptoms:

June-August 2016
Tightness and dull feeling in left addcutor at the onset of runs. Progressively got to the point that I was developing pain in lower left abdomen just above the pelvis and to the side toward the hip, post runs. Pain was on the sharp side.

August-November 2016
Visited chiropractor, ART, Graston.....diagnosis, Rectus Abdominis Strain. Was taking celebrex now to manage pain after runs.
Sharp pain felt during flip turns, sneezing, coughing.
Did not slow me down. 20hr weeks were norm, 15k swim/ 220-250mi bike/ 40-45mi run.

Nov 20 2016, race
Mile 16 on the run, very sharp pain across the abdominal area and over the hip, could not drive my knee forward without pain zapping my breath for about 200m, resumed limping and running and finished my IMAZ. No regrets, would do it again.

November 2016- now
Post race, that same spot in rectus abdominis, above pelvis, very angry.......:) So I went back to chiro with now the full ART, Graston and dry needling. Went to look for another eval to sports medicine specialist/surgeon.
PT now 9 weeks and going.

Clinical test for hip impingement negative. Done 5 or 6 times. I am cool as cucumber when the doc manipulates my leg through the test. No pain.
X-ray revealed "small CAM and pincer deformity" on the femoral neck.
Lidocaine injection+ arthrogram+ MRI:
asked to run post diagnostic procedure to eliminate hip as a source, could not run- that test also negative (supposed to feel like million bucks and run), no way, arthrogram ruined me for a month now, still recovering.
MRI: multifocal labral tear, likely less than 7mm, anterior and mid superior side of hip.
No mention of sports hernia or tears and strain not detectable on MRI.
Symptoms very gradually improving in abdominal area, but very slow. Now complete 2 months of no swim/bike/run, just PT. Still feeling it.
I could tell you more, but don't want to scare you.
