does this bike exist?
hi all -

i'm considering doing a long bike tour in west africa, and thinking about bike selection. in terms of availability of parts, repairs, durability, etc., here's what i'm thinking:
-steel frame mtb
-26" wheels
-v-brakes
-rigid fork

is anyone building these anymore? i'm a little leery of buying used, because i'd really want the thing to stand up to a beating. alternatively, i suppose i could ride my (steel) cyclocross bike, and then bring along spare spokes/tubes/tyres/etc., but that adds weight and hassle - 26" spares will be much more available.

thoughts?

Curious why you say 26" spares will be much more available? I've found 700c/29" tubes with Presta valves even at Walmart/Target et al.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there are a lot of Walmart/Target, et al. stores in West Africa. Ryan

not a lot of walmarts in Sierra Leone!

the most common bikes on the road here are 26" MTBs, by a long shot.

Oh I'm an idiot. I misread that as "out west" implying western Canada/USA.
With that, I'll bow out, but I'm not surprised that 26" MTBs are most common there. Probably Schrader valves at that?

By the way the complete Troll is sold with disc brakes, but you can buy it just as a frameset. The Troll fork has bosses to mount either cantis, v-brakes, or discs.

ha! yeah. starting to see some disc brakes around, and the odd weird imported hybrid, but mostly it's old-school (chinese) 26" mtbs.

Look up Bruce Gordon Rock and Road bikes. I think that's what you're looking for.

at the risk of being obvious, I think you need a buffalo bicycle from Rappstar's connections at Specialized,

https://worldbicyclerelief.org/en/bike/

That bike is what the locals would ride if they could get it, if not they ride horrible Chinese rattletraps that are similar in design.

erm . . .that's a 54-pound single-speed bike. all respect to WBR (i helped start a Bicycle Empowerment Network shop in namibia, years ago) but that's not the machine i'm riding a 6000km tour on.
