Found this over at letsrun. I think he recently did a 24 min 5k and 12 of his buds bet him 100 pounds ($124 US bucks right now) that he couldn't. If he loses he gets their names tattooed on his body.

PRs for Colin McCourt:
800 m (Outdoor): 1:46.73 on 24 Jun 2006
800 m (Indoor): 1:49.24 on 26 Feb 2006
1500 m (Outdoor): 3:37.06 on 10 Jul 2010
1500 m (Indoor): 3:38.71 on 19 Feb 2011
One Mile (Outdoor): 4:17.94 on 25 Jul 2009
One Mile (Indoor): 4:04.97 on 5 Feb 2011
3000 m (Outdoor): 7:59.31 on 4 Jun 2008
3000 m (Indoor): 8:11.31 on 27 Feb 2005
Two Miles (Outdoor): 8:51.39 on 24 May 2008
5K: 14:50 Six years ago.

I think it might be too ambitious. The weight is gonna be a big factor but I would say 175 at his height should do it. I think sub 18 would come quick but after that it might be a tough process. Also has a 7 month old and is still living like a normal person with a job. I think that is prolly worth a min or more his PR (which is soft compared to his others. 14 flattish for his 3K time)

Mostly interested to see how often he runs a 5K all out and how many indicator workouts he tries. Also the weight to speed factor. I am hoping he does it just to learn a little more. Thoughts?

Guy has run 3:37 for 1500 which equals sub 13:30 5K, if he loses weight and runs easy for year it should be a piece of cake. No need to
do any speed work.

His PRs in 2011 are pretty impressive- I say he does it easily once his training starts to click and he gets down to 185 or less. How long does he have to get ready?

Exactly. He has a ton of talent and he's already done the work in the past. Getting back to a respectable level is only going to be as hard as losing the weight and getting in a few consistent miles.

It's not that big a challenge if he just adopts a few good habits.
Right now he is unfit, should be able to get to 18mins in a couple of months.

Doesn't need to do a lot of 5km races or indicator sets - just run 4x per week consistently for a few months, restrict calories a little and he'll get there.

It sounds like his friends are staging an intervention to get him in shape and have come up with a challenge to get him motivated.

One year. The sentiment at letsrun is the same. I figured the regular life, 7 month old, and not being a full time pro would make STers lean a little more cautious than over there.

I wonder what the over under on months would be. I would want to aim to do it in 9 months so that you would have a little leeway with injury, sickness, kid getting in way (remember, not a pro).

The biggest information tidbit is how hard that 24 min 5K was recently.
