It was a great day. Taupo is such a magic little spot. The event is a low pretty key affair compared to the IM. Lots of good vibe among the participants. There were over 500 people in the race and although there was quite a bit of drafting the weather was great with a high of around 75 degrees, but mostly cloudy. You'd have to say it was ideal racing conditions. Hardly a breeze out there all day. The lake was very flat and calm. I think the times were pretty average - if you see the results they don't reflect actual finish times for the top 10. There were a lot of 10-minute drafting penalties added on after the race was over. It was good to get out there and remember what a long way 180km is go steady. Very slow road surface here on most New Zealand roads.

More important question...did you go to the bash that night? If so, how was it? I had so much fun at that race last year. Sure wish I'd made the trip again this year.

Skid,

Saw you there but let you have some peace and quiet. I heard you skipped the run. How come? Calf muscle was the rumour going round.

Seeing you sitting on the bank by the beach while I ran by may be the only time I ever pass you (or anyone else for that matter) on the run. I now have a great story to tell. I will have to leave out a few important details however :-).

I agree a great day but too much drafting for my liking. Even as far back in the pack as I ride. Very sad. roads were pretty rough in sections, ie most of it. I had a PB so I'm pretty stoked.

The Bash was excellent. Hooksie was in fine form.

At the race briefing I asked (1st year competitor) if there was a change tent or if it was "Full Monty"? Full Monty it was then.

At the awards, Hooksie held up a black G-String and asked who's it was? Eventually a blushing girl/woman admitted it was hers. Hooksie found it in transitiona nd wanted the story. Eventually red faced girl got to the stage to be whistled at. She won a bike for her Full Monty, getting out of her G!

Some guy went all the way in T1 and T2. Hooksie didn't care and only gave him a bottle of Bourbon only! Good entertainment.

The 70's dance went of a real treat. I left at 1:00am with the music still blaring and about 30-40 gyrating trigeeks in costume still boppin to the beats. Awesome time even though my head disagreed in the morning.

See ya next year Cathy?

Oh year, Ray Pitch (allegedly the hairiest triathlete in NZ) had his legs waxed for charity (CF) on the night before the race. I missed it personally but it would've been a hoot to watch.

Thanks for the report!!

Probably not next year as I've promised some Aussies I'd come there first. If only to win the lottery! Have bike, will travel.
