Why we all(yes you too) are going to die :(
Quote | Reply
Got this from Men's Health:

Bad news for fit endurance athletes and great news for lazy asses.

"Your excercising heart rate can forecast more than calories burned-it can also predict your risk of an early death.

French researchers put 6000 men through a workout, then tracked their health for 23 yrs.

Men whose heart rate rose the least during excerise-by less than 89 beats per min(bpm)-were six times more likely to die of a heart attack than men whose heart rates skyrocketed

Men whose heart rate didn't drop by at least 25bpm within one minute after a workout also had a greater risk of cardiac death.

The culprit? A heart that can't adapt to sudden changes in blood pressure, like those that occur during a heart attack, says lead author Xavier Jouven, M.D.

Now excuse me, i need to get back to writing my will

You can do everything in life correctly in terms of nutrition, lifestyle, exercise, etc and get run over on your next bike ride by a transport truck.

Life is a gamble. We're all playing the odds.

Don't read that stuff. The science is bad and the journalism is worse.

How long was the workout? Only one workout? Circumstances before and during the workout. They tested 6000, but how many did they follow? You can get a statistical sampling from 30+, so the could have just followed 30-40 individuals of the 6000. Family history of the persons? Diets? Ethniticy? Economic class? Weight/fitness at time of heart attack? Type A/B personalities? What researchers conduted the test? Can other scientists duplicate/confirm results?

Even without reading the article, it sounds a bit suspicious, at best.

Can you be more specific? I'm not asking for the day, but the month and year would be nice.

Ah, thankfully this is a FRENCH study ... If the men studied were all French (Francois not withstanding), then that explains it. Probably why they are so dominating in sports and warfare - at least they are smart: they know when to fold and don't worry about a cultural takeover. Their food and art is much too nice to loose :)

Oh, that's harsh.

As someone that is of French heritage, I can repeat this joke I heard from a comedian ...

Q: How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?

A: The world will never know.

Brrrrrrr ....

elite cyclists can have heart problems later in life, as my coach says, their "hearts get bigger and stretch the wiring"

first of all, i find most studies in mens health are misinturpreted, or the results overblown, sit in your primary care doctor's office for a while, see the type of people who come in. Anyway, that being said, who wants to live forever, id rather have 50-60 years of doing tons of crazy stuff (i.e. triathlon) than 80 years of watching tv.

DOn't understand why that report's getting a bashing - isn't it usual for athletes to have a bigger heartbeat range than non-exercisers? The fitter I get the lower my resting heartrate gets whereas when I'm ill or out of shape I find it really hard to get my HR up to usual levels. i.e. When I'm at my fittest my HR shows a massive variance - isn't this normal?

I just checked out the study on MyWebMD. I think at least by what you stated from the article it was a bit misinterpretated.

The three risk factors listed were:

# A heart rate of more than 75 beats per minute before exercise (resting heart rate)
# An increase of less than 89 beats per minute during peak exercise performance
# A decrease of less than 25 beats per minute after exercise

Most fit athletes have a resting heart rate well below 75 bpm--at least men. (Mine is around 42--some have as low as high 20's to low 30's)

Most fit athletes have an increase of more than 89 bpm with peak exercise--say max rate in 180's on up--partially a genetics and age play a role in this--my max is 197 and I'm 31.

A fit persons heart rate will drop quickly when exercise is stopped were an unfit persons heart rate will take longer to come down to a resting rate.

The article states:

# An increased resting heart rate nearly quadrupled the men's risk.
# Men with hearts that were sluggish during exercise were 6.2 times more likely to experience sudden death.
# Those with hearts that had trouble slowing down after exercise had roughly double the risk of sudden death.

Also they recommend exercise to decrease risk:

Many of those risk factors can be improved. For instance, exercise, stress control, and a healthy diet can help; so can medications, when needed. Doctors can assess your risk and outline your options. Seek immediate help if you sense any heart problem.

Some elite endurance athletes can have heart valve problems later in life but it is not know (to my knowledge) how much of this is exercise induced versus a genetic factor.

So from the study it seems that being a lazy ass is a much bigger risk factor than being an active athlete.
