The system seems to be pro's with the low #'s (natch) then age-groupers with the numbers going from oldest groups (low #) to youngest groups (highest #). Somewhere a 20 yo male will get #1700. I did notice last year that low #'s were given to folks who were entered by the grace of WTC which I guess you would call wild-card entries. I think there is also a separate # list for PC athletes.

The first 100 bib # seem to be usually reserved for the top 100 from the previous year. Then it continues on between 101 and about 200 with more pros and top amateurs and people of interest. Plus some pros are assigned "not used" spots betwen 20 and 100. Then from about 201 age groups as it was described before with oldes first, which of course overlaps with "people of interest" such as Bill Bell, Bill Albrecht, Ken Nash Bob Southwell, Frank Farrar, Gerhard Krauss and Lew Hollander. (04 Bibs 196-202) .

Pretty much right on.

In the past, as I recall from working registration, the first x get those numbers (up to about 35-40?). Then there are the rest of the pros. Then a grouping of "media interest" people, then the AGers. This year they are going old to young, low numbers to high). I think they switch that every year so next year it will be young to old.

The actual bibs are color coded--normal for AGers, one color for pros, another color for media interest and green for Big Island athletes. On race morning, the BI athletes get a circle drawn around their numbers on their arms.

Years ago it was done alphabetically and they would alternate each year a - z and then z - a. the reason for this was that the way the bikes were arranged on the pier( when T1 was in the Pier), it was a LONG run to get your bike at the back of the pier if you had #1000 or whatever high number. Pros back then got the number of their overall place from the year before and new pros were given a # in the top 100. I believe that they have changed to a different system now.

Other than the pros and featured athletes, it looks as thought they have based it on where you qualified. Looking at irnclm's list of ST'ers kp and irnclm are in the high 400's, low 500's and they qualified at NZ, while marisol, myself, martygaal, etc qualified at AZ and are in the 1400-1500 range.

Of course I've been known to be wrong before ;-)

And wrong again!

KP and I are in the same AG. A gal in my AG who qualified at Half VM as a similar number.

One of the young gals who qualified in NZ has a 1700 range number.

I'm guessing you, marisol and marty are in the 30-34 or 35-39 AGs.

Yes after 100 or so they are by age group. beginning with the oldest women and working back. Last year within an age group did it both by age and alphapetical. I think they are doing that the same this yr. For example In my age group (W50-54) Laura Sopheia who just aged up to 50 is 386, me at 52 is 412 and Missy Lestrange who just turned 53 in Aug is 418.
