Benny Vansteelant won by over 9 minutes. No mention of Kenny Souza in this short story.

Vansteelant wins in his 3rd attempt –
Csomor repeats last years victory

In his 3rd attempt the 29 year old Belgium Benny Vansteelant managed to gain the
first win at the Powerman Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen (SUI). In the
women’s race Hungarian Erika Csomor repeated her last years victory.

Under the usual Zofingen weather conditions with cold temperatures and rain Vansteelant
demonstrated his abilities from the beginning on while blessed Swiss athletes Olivier
Bernhard and Stefan Riesen had been absent. „Mister Duathlon“ headed the lead group in
the first 10 km run and was riding together with his Belgiam fellow Koen Maris in the
beginning of the bike race. Koen was able to follow until 75 km, later Vansteelant managed
to set a 3:42 min lead to arrive in second transition. Behind this duo time differences had
been 15 minutes and more. On the 2 lap 30 km run to the famous Heiteren square and
back Vansteelant was unreachable and increased the lead on Maris to nearly 10 min.
American Josh Beck made it bronze running from 8th place in T2 to 3rd place.

In the women’s race Jess Dreskau Petersson (Gbr) proved in both run legs to be the
fastest runner in the field. The bike race began with the lead of Tamara Kozulina (Triathlon
Long Distance Worldchampion 2004) and Ulrika Schwalbe (Duathlon Long Distance
Worldchampion 2004). Schwalbe moved to the front after 30 km for 100 km, then Maja
Jacober created the surprise by taking the lead. But the 33 year old Swiss didn’t manage
to keep the lead of 4:50 min so first Csomor, then Dreskau Petersson and in sight of the
Powerman Arena Kozulina could pass.

The additional price money for the overall win, the women had started 56 min before the
men, was for Vansteelant. “Oldie” Kenny Souza, the 1990 winner and 1992 second, came
back to Zofingen for once and made it 38th overall at the age of 40 years. The 64 year old
Willy Erismann, who never had missed a start in the Zofingen Duathlon history, looked
forward to his 17th finish.

It looks like Kenny Souza went 38th overall (23rd Male Elite) in 7:23:08 . Not bad for an "old guy", but there were also four athletes in M40 that finished in front of him.
