You can tape them if you want, but the pre-molded cable routing is nice and clean by it self.

yes, but not cycling tape. it sucks. use tennis tape.

I'm more putting the tape on so my hands don't slip while ridign races w/o gloves. Or is this not really a problem?

yeah, whatever they use to wind raquets. i went to the tennis shop and got whatever matched my bike - costs like $5 per roll, tops, and is way, way stickier when you're sweater (and way lower-profile, too).

Try taking a inner tube from like you use in your wheels and sliding it on. Put hairspray in it to get it on quicker and so it sticks!
