[reply]like the guy who passed me on the run at River City...helmet still strapped on tight...head down...shoulders churning away.[/reply]

I did a beginner's (coed) tri on Saturday (along with TimW, Hinds57 and JohnA), and I was finished and walking back to get something to drink and a guy was heading out on the run and I heard the gal at the run out corner say, "Do you want to really want to run with your helmet on?" Oops!

This race was probably 40% first-timers and about half women. The nice thing is that the RD has an "experienced triathlete" wave that goes first. 150 total Type As. No USAT, so no marshals and lots of drafting on the bike and riders all over the place (I swear, some people can't hold a line to save their life, and these weren't beginners!) I pulled a pack for a couple of miles just because I didn't want to be caught up in the middle of them if someone crossed wheels.

The RD also reserves the last wave for anyone who really wants to go last or anyone who wants to race together the entire way. Since the race isn't timed (but there is a finisher clock), it's no biggie. He also says that if you need assistance on the swim, take it, but your swim is over, though you are encouraged to do the bike and run.

Things I saw:

Big variety of bikes--mountain, road, classic steel touring bikes, tri bikes. A little of everything.

All shapes and body types, both men and women.

Lots of balloons to find one's bike.

Some iPods on the run.

A good number of kids, including two girls who did the entire race with mom. I was doing a cool down jog and told them "good job!" They had huge smiles on their faces. Another little girl was running with dad and they were ahead of mom and let mom know that.

Lots of smiles.

Youngest participants were 9 yo (boy and girl) and oldest was 65 or so (female).

I was 10th woman onto the run, but not at the finish. Hinds57 was leading JohnA into the last mile of the run--how'd it turn out?

Very fun day.

I remember seeing the race director of a duathlon (sorry, not a triathlon) talking to and explaining to him he couldn't wear his silver spray-painted construction hat that had shoelaces for a chinstrap. Pretty funny.

In my first triathlon, I saw a guy finish the race with his swim cap and bike gloves still on!

Do you have any idea what the hue and cry from the feminist crowd would be at a men's only tri?

I saw a newbie at a sprint I did in April fill two small buckets with water and put them by her bike in transition. She laid a towel down next to them, and it turns out they were for washing her feet in T1 and T2.

Imagine washing and drying your feet, twice, in a sprint tri.

It was kinda cute to see.

To me it's the same thing as the "Foot Locker" stores in a mall near me. There's Lady Foot locker, which has NO men's stuff in it. And RIGHT across the mall is Foot locker, which has less than HALF men's stuff.

I would have to say that men definitely get the shaft when it comes to apparel, etc. Especially if you aren't partial to XXL just for kicks or that new pair of basketball shorts.

But that being said, I noticed that REI is carrying tri clothing now but they really didn't have a women's selection.

Tri clothing at REI? I'll have to check that out. Their bike section seems to be lacking in anything but touring gear... I never would have thought.

I came through in front of John but I have to add he did need to stop a few times to stretch his knee. Unfortunately Brett came in ahead of me so I can only claim 2nd place for our neighborhood. I saw you on the turn around and called out your name. You had your game face on big time, I didn’t think you even noticed me go by. That race is always a lot of fun.

Just a few of the observations that made me take a second look,

The giant balloons on many of the bikes.

The people who posed for 5 minutes worth of pictures in T2.

The guy going out on the bike with his goggles still on.

Bikes with 3 water bottles for an 11 mile bike.

Many buckets of water for washing feet.

People changing sox for the run.

I saw you and heard you, but by the time I was going to say something...too late. I did give John a shout. And saw Brett. He was running strong. I looked for you guys right after, but I had to go do my extra run. Went and saw our friend later that afternoon.

No one has ever accused me of being an optimist with sunshine and roses, so even a cynical bitch (me) can read the original post and understand the (positive) post. Thank you. Got the point and it was interesting.

Or maybe it was those "feel good" martinis at lunch. And I don't know any forum history.

The point here might be that one does not need an expensive race machine to do well, as this woman stomped most of the field on an ugly old mountain bike. Or not.

The point here might be that, based on my observations yesterday, woman are more practical in their bike purchases than men, choosing more versatile, all-around bikes. Or not.
Nice recovery. :)

That's what I was thinking. He was like 'oh boy stepped in it now'. He should work in the White House doing spin control.
