Thursday May 24, 2007 Teen could face charges in Clarksburg publisher's death by Kelly L. Holleran Daily Mail staff A teenager could be charged for contributing to a bike-riding accident that killed Clarksburg publisher and lawyer J. Cecil Jarvis, officials said.
The accident is still being investigated, said Trooper L.C. Carpenter.
Jarvis, 58, died about 6:30 p.m. on Skin Creek Road near Stonewall Jackson Lake.
Clarksburg dentist Mike Miller was one of four cyclists with Jarvis.
Three of the men were ahead of Jarvis and Miller was behind him.
Miller saw something happen and raced ahead for about 45 seconds to catch up. He found Jarvis on the road.
"He was unconscious," Miller said. "He had a severe bruise on his forehead. There was a pretty good cut right on his chin."
When Miller arrived, Jarvis was still breathing. He died en route to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital in Weston.
Miller said about 10 teenagers were milling about. One apparently had been chasing people and trying to startle them with a rubber snake, he said.
"He was very distraught," Miller said of the boy.
The group of five cyclists had gathered for years on Tuesday evenings for a ride, Miller said.
They always wore helmets, and Jarvis was wearing his when the accident occurred.
Trooper Carpenter said information about the accident will be presented to the Lewis County prosecutor.
Jarvis graduated with honors from Lehigh University in 1971 with a bachelor's degree in engineering. He studied law at Vanderbilt Universityand graduated in 1975.
Jarvis became president of Clarksburg Publishing Co. in 2002. He also spent more than 30 years as a lawyer with McNeer, Highland, McMunn and Varner.
Jarvis was an avid outdoorsman and athlete. He had been in four Ironman triathlons and competed in two Boston marathons. His goal was to participate in a marathon in every state, according to the Associated Press.
In addition to his work as president of the newspaper company, Jarvis also was involved in the merger of United Hospital Center and West Virginia United Health System. He worked on a campaign to build a new hospital.
Jarvis is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son, according to the Associated Press.
"This is a tough time," said Michael Crim, director of the law firm. "We were close to him. Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with the family."
Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bridgeport United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Bridgeport Cemetery.
The family requested memorial contributions be sent to the J. Cecil Jarvis Memorial Scholarship Fund for Journalism, in care of BB&T, Clarksburg Branch, 100 S. Fourth St., Clarksburg, W.Va. 26301, according to the Associated Press.
