Any benefits from training in the heat?
This summer marks my first year in tri. The last 12 months have been a success finishing in the top 3 of my age group of all my races.

I live in Phoenix and am having a hard time transitioning to the heat during training. It's getting WAY too hot for long rides and runs outside.

Anyone else live in the area and have some personal tips other than STAY INSIDE!

I've overheard from others, that training in the heat has some training benfits like increasing your VO2. Not sure how?

That is an interesting question. When you train in the heat there is increased cutaneous blood flow as your body attempts to cool off.

i'm in central cal and know what you're talking about. i think the only thing i've seen is that if i train in the heat, i race far better in the heat. i don't know that it will increase/decrease the body's reaction to training (aside from the lower volume of training you can do in extreme heat) seems the most my body can handle is 2 hrs at 100 degrees. lots of water, slow pace. i'm interested to see what the more scientific types here say about the physiological benefits of training in the heat.

I live in Chandler & trained through the summer last year having skipped the previous summer. If you are able to alter your schedule to do most of your longer workouts in the early am that helps. I don't know about the benefits of training in the heat but IMO it does make you mentally stonger. I try to start early & avoid the heat later in the day.Yesterday I ran from 5:45pm until 7:15pm which was pretty miserable & I had to modify my route to make sure I had sufficient water stops.

I live in Singapore.

It gets pretty damn hot here (30-35C ) as we are one-degree north of the equator. Humidity is high as well. Everday is pretty much the same , although we do get a rainy season which is monsoon , around Nov. to Feb.

I do most of my rides starting at one in the afternoon. My theory is and always has been , train as you will race. Granted it's not the most comfortable , but I'm never surprised when it comes to races. Additionally , prior to my regional races I will usually slip in some long runs 1.30-2.15mins starting at 12ish. Running is much more difficult I find than cycling cause your limited with what you can carry.

Prehydration is paramount , in the days prior. Generally speaking , I try to to ALWAYS stay virtually "race-ready" as far as hydration goes anyway. Minimising caffeine and alcohol is important in allowing your body to fully hydrate in the days prior. I take a magnesium supplement daily as well.

A couple of hours before a run I will drink as per normal and have one or two Endurolytes, diluted juices , especially lemon juice ( not lemonade ) and top up until 20 mins before I start. I carry a sandwhich bag with ID ,+-$20 and some coins ( for can machines should I pass any ). I can usually run 1.15-1.30 before I really need to drink, but once I do drink it is every 30mins from there on in. I normally run routes where there will be a gas station or corner store to run in quick at pre-determined times.Water is fine if consumed with electrolytes or juices as well , but NEVER alone.

As far as physiological adaptations , I can't answer that scientifically.

train as you race. I did my run preparation for IMUK last year on vacation in Sardinia and I deliberately chose the hottest part of the day to run in because that's what most IM marathons are all about. So look at your race schedule and timings and try to train accordingly.

The only thing that I can think of would be an increase in vasculature to the skin, but I don't know if there are any scientific studies looking at that.

I live in Austin so it regularly gets above 100 F during the day in the summer. I'll get at least 1 run workout in during the middle of the day. I think it just prepares you mentally to run in the worst conditions possible.
