How long do running shoes remain 'good' if still in the box? Is there a practical shelf life for the shoes before they shouldn't be ran in? People talk about buying older models of shoes, and of buying 3-4 pairs; reasonably, then, if the retailer had them for a year, and then it could take another 9 months to a year to get to the 4th pair, are they still 'good' - or has the foam, gel, etc. degraded somehow to the point that it's detrimental?

I've found shoes after 2-3yrs in my closet in the box (several moves later they surfaced). No issues with them. unless you are storing them at extreme heat I think you'll be ok. Unless they are Asics size 9.5 then send them to me.

Curiously enough, they ARE Asics size 9.5...lol... I bought 65 pairs, various sizes, for an event we were doing at work about 1.5 yrs ago, and we never used them. They're the shoes that I run in, so I'm thinking of trying to convince my boss that letting me have 3-4 pair would be a good idea... just wondering if I should bother. I'm going to bother...

the EVA foam will degrade, not so much with time as with heat or other radiation, UV in particular. I have a pair of Nike Spirodon from the late 80's that have fossilized.
the gel in Asics seems to last about forever, I have a 3+year-old pair of Asics that still feels better-cushioned on the concrete trails than a new pair of non-gel shoes..
"It is a good feeling for old men who have begun to fear failure, any sort of failure, to set a schedule for exercise and stick to it. If an aging man can run a distance of three miles, for instance, he knows that whatever his other failures may be, he is not completely wasted away." Romain Gary, SI interview

I've found that when I buy two pairs of shoes and kept one stored (in the box, in a closet, no heat or cold extremes) that the second pair feels just fine initially, but doesn't last as long as the initial pair, for whatever reason.

In theory I guess they should last forever in the box. Even if they - for example - caught some humidity or over-heat they should feel like new since it's the impact that causes damage on them.
