clinchers or tubulars in rain?
Looking at the weather forcast for Harriman, it looks like rain. There's a long slightly winding descent, and another bumpy descent with a sharp turn. My wife is not racing, so I can use her Flashpoint clinchers or my 606 tubulars. Does anybody know which would be better in the rain on a course like this?

With the right tires and tubes mounted the right way, the debate between clinchers and tubulars is a wash.

However between the Flashpoints and the 606s, go with the 606s every time.

I had the same question for Harriman this weekend also. A followup question: What would be a good PSI for the race? I should let some air out for the wet conditions, right?

absolutely use clinchers here. There's no substitute for alu braking performance.

I'd run tubulars, at a reduced tire pressure, not over 140PSI, probably in the 120PSI ball park. I've only had one near fall on my tubular wheels, and that was in freezing rain at 170PSI.

ordinarily tubs, but the alu braking surface trumps the tyre choice. Go with the clinchers.

My tubs are Hed 3's, with the aluminum braking surface, so I can still race them while it's wet.

Tom, my knowledge about cycling products is very limited, so my apology for the newbie-ish question. I don't understand that if tubulars are so superior, why most of the high-end wheels come in clincher versions too ? Why would one choose a clincher zipp instead of a tubular of the same model ?

Thanks

Ask H20Fun. But, I'm pretty sure the answer is because you "race for fun".

Even that undergraduate course in Cryptography didn't help me decipher what you wrote.

It's an ongoing saga/joke about H2OFun's (he's Dave, BTW) choice to buy his Zedtechs in clincher. Really nothing useful to be gained from my post. Just a cheap shot (all in good fun) at Dave.

Haha, thanks for clarifying, I googled H20Fun (with zero not O) without much meaningful results. Now that you mentioned, I remembered that I have seen his posts.

Depends if you care about spending for a flat tire replacement? Go Tubs and start feathering the brakes well before the hairpin to dry up the rims. Go with slightly lower pressure. After all, they are only few turns to worry about and if you take them at a moderate speed you won't slip (unless you're at 180psi).
