I hate the strap that comes on my Forerunner - it's crap. Garmin sells a replacement velcro strap, but I'm wonderring if anyone here has replaced it with a generic strap, like a Timex velcro or anything like that? Basically, I'm wonderring if the Garmin is a special pin size, or would any old strap do?

I have the bike/run one from garmin (velcro)...lot better than the vinyl.

I replaced mine (forerunner 301) with a standard off the shelf replacement strap and it fits fine.

Perfect!!! That's exactly what I want to hear. (I'd much rather spend $2 on a generic strap than $10 for a Garmin one)
If you've got the 305 (sounds like you may not though) the Garmin strap allows for the cradle to be slid in under the strap for charging/uploading. So I imagine the required slack is more an issue to be concerned with than pin size. Not sure a generic strap would allow an appropriate amount of room.
