Safe to clamp carbon frames?

What's the story with using a bike stand that clamps onto the frame with a carbon bike? I've heard you aren't supposed to do it but I see it done all the time.

If you must, clamp it gently as if holding an egg. I have a Giant Trinity and they say not to clamp it all.

You should avoid this as much as possible. It takes no time to mark your seatpost and put a dummy post in the bike to clamp onto. For bikes with an aero post clamp the seat or use something like the Minoura floor stand. Better to be safe than sorry.

There are basically two types of clamping mechanisms on bike stands. One with a ratchet-type lever that clamps onto the bike such as: http://www.performancebike.com/...;subcategory_ID=4216

Or one with a clamp with more of an "infinite" adjustment: http://www.performancebike.com/...;subcategory_ID=4216

Don't use the first one on a carbon. I had to buy a stand similar to the second one to work on my carbon frame (and seatpost) bike.

That makes sense. I've got the Park PCS9 which has pretty wide jaws but I'm still not sure I trust it.

I clamp mine in a similar park stand. I always wrap the bar with a small towel and am very careful as to how tight I clamp it. I clamp on the top (edit) tube and haven't had a problem.

I agree with Scott, best thing is to clamp the seatpost (it is designed to be clamped, after all).
