My aunt lives there. It is pretty country and lots of open country roads, doubt there is much of a cycling scene though. Lots of great climbing and not far from the Blue Ridge Skyway. Not sure how safe it is with tourist traffic, but you will get some of the best views in the US.

You must be working a state job?

When I hiked the Appalachian Trail last year we saw several groups of cyclists on the parkway. Seemed like a nice place to ride. I would think all the Harleys would be more of a nuisance than the cars.

Some of the best cycling on the East coast right around there, and even better mountain biking! Plenty of riders across the Blue Ridge in fooftown or up 81 in Harrisonburg.

Not sure about the organization in Staunton, but you are about 35 minutes to Charlottesville, and there is a lot here - road,tri, mountain. Different groups will put up rides on the Blue Ridge - it is pretty safe riding there.

I've lived in both Harrisonburg (30 minutes north of Staunton) and Charlottesville (30 minutes east). There's wonderful riding in the area. The mountain biking is especially great, but plenty of people do road racing there too. Check out the Shenandoah Valley Bike Club at http://www.svbikeclub.org/index.html. Looks like they're still doing the weekly 10 mile tt.

plenty of fast guys down there - lots of mtb'ers too. Jefferson Cup (VA state champ'ships) is on Sunday in Charlottesville.
