Cyciing in the Berkshires + Martha's Vineyard
Quote | Reply
Anyone know of some good riding routes in the Berkshires and/or Martha's Vineyard? Haven't been to either place, but I will likely be spending time in the both locations in the coming months while training for IMC. I have heard there is good riding at both but have gotten no specifics. Looking for 100-120 mile rides (2 loops if need be) with decent quality roads, wide shoulder, etc. A good bike shop wouldn't be bad to know either.

thanks in advance,
Jack Smith

My grandparents have a vacation home in North Egremont and my parents are building a second home here (near Great Barrington in the Berkshires) so I have grown up knowing the area by car and by running, but haven't been exploring on bike yet. I'm hoping to get some biking in this summer if we have enough of a place to sleep in!
Mt. Greylock is the best climbing as far as I know, unfortunately it looks like the state will be paving the road to the top for the next two summers - do a search on Mt. Greylock hillclimb and you will come up with a bunch of road bike club/ touring sites. IMHO the roads in the berkshires are for the most part well maintained, smooth, not busy (except in the heart of touristy towns like Great Barrington, Stockbridge, Lee) but don't have much of a shoulder.

here's a cue sheet and map for the 2005 greylock century: http://www.berkshirecycling.org/rides/greylock_map.php

Tyler Hamilton used to put on a charity century that ended on Mt. Greylock for the MS society, here is a link to their page that has some more cue sheets for various length rides: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/...nt_detail.asp?e=6673
Have fun!

We have the most amazing rides in the Berkshires. Ironman race prep 140 miles in cluding Greylock climb of 3,495 feet theen a roller coaster ride of hills and rollers to get 10,000 feet of climbing in. Awesome!:) If you want hills and spectacular views the Berkshires are where its at. Lots of local bike clubs. Google bike shops in Western MA. and alot of them post rides.Ther are excellant bike maps of the area-I live here and still rely on the map. Itll let you know less than perfect road. If you have the chance a awesome ride around Quabbin Res. Is beautiful. It about 60 miles around.
Have fun exploring...
