How heavy is actually heavy?
A recent post got me thinking- what is a legitimate weight to think your bike is too heavy? I recently weighed my tri bike in "commuter" mode it came in at 23 lbs (yikes). I believe (hope) I can shave maybe a pound or two in race trim but this is still quite heavy in bicycle terms. Bottom line- can I use this to convince the wife I need a new bike? ;)

Of course it hurts. The trick is not minding it hurts.

I'll give this a shot, but first, what is "commuter mode"?

I'd say for a tri bike 20# is the dividing line

for a road bike; 18#

for a mountain bike; 25#

Anyone agree?

Headlamp with battery, pump attached to frame, training wheels with gatorskins and slime tubes (yes I tried them ;), 2 x rear LED blinker.

With me on it, the bike weighs 220. A few grams of titanium don't help. Now, if I lose 20-30 lbs, then we can talk bike weight.

I think it also depends on the size of the frame.

My TT bikes - 23 lbs

My road bike - 18.5 lbs

My #2 road bike - 18 lbs

Road bikes are 62cm. TT's are 700c large frame/large beam Zipps.

Yeah, I think a lot of people hold their bikes to a higher standard than they do themselves. Also, it's a hell of a lot cheaper for me to drop 5 pounds than it is for my bike to.

The HPV bikes that go 70-80 mph weigh between 70 and 90 lbs. going fast is all about the aerodynamics and the engine, mostly the engine.

On a side note, do you all weigh your bikes with the race equipment attached or unattached? (seat bag, C02, levers, empty water bottles, tubes, etc)?

My Cervelo is a little above 20lbs with all that stuff on it.

is it common to use a commuter bike as a race bike?

If you own one bike it is.

Big surprise here- no problems so far pulling double duty.

The track guys ride 6 lb frames because they want stiff, they could care about heavy.

I am not sure there is a "line" on heavy. This is purely a psychological barrier. Now heavy bikes frequently have poor rolling resistance, the problem is not that they are "heavy", it is the tires and the maintenance.

You could put Lance on a Walmart special in his prime and he would kick all our butts.

I'd imainge you could shed a lot more than a lb or 2 offa that bike in race trim.

Just the swap from training wheels (w/ slime tubes and gator skins to boot, those must be like manhole covers) to nice race wheels will save ya a big chunk o' tonnage.
I don't imagine you race with a headlamp and battery or 2 LED's either.

However, I suggest you use the currrent weight as the reason to convince the wife that you "need" a new race bike. Whatever works w/ the boss is all that matters.
If it's 9 speed that's another reason - you "need" 10 spd.
At least as far as she knows.
