Vision DragOn cables - necessary?
Visiontech/FSA state that you must use their cables with their brake levers - does anybody know why/if this is really true?

I'd like to buy a set of these levers to go with my Vision bars, but want to use them on a tandem, which means I need to use tandem-length cables...

I have the original Vision brake levers. They use a smaller head on the cable than is standard, which is almost the same size as a derailleur head.

You can run std derailleur cables (the head is the same size), but then you are using the thinner cable diameter. Now, I've sure never heard of anyone snapping one (and I recable my bikes every year), but on a tandem? Probably better splurge for the Visiontech cables. The regular brake cables won't work as the head is way too big for the lever.

I gather that you ask the question becuase Vision probably does not make a tandem length brake cable.

On possible option is to use the Vision cable out of the brake lever and use one of those travel bike cable splitters (like that which is used with S&S coupler frames or other travel bikes) downstream to splice to a longer stretch of conventional cable to reach the rear brake.

Before you use a derailleur cable, try using a standard road brake cable. I suspect it may work, but the large part of the cable end will protrude from the lever.

Andy,

The Vision cable is a brake cable with a derailleur cable size head on it.

I have been using a standard tandem brake cable with the head machined down to fit the Vision lever, and a full year and several cables in, I have had no problems.
