More cool bike company engineering

...although while Litespeed is greatly known in our triathlon world, it appears they may be branching out?

Yesterday I was speaking with one of my aerospace customers who has been winning alot of contracts for things like robotic arms and other parts going into space (specifically Mars). It was funny when they brought up bicycle manufacturers where I got to discuss some of the excellent work, and not so excellent work done by various companies. They confirmed this, and then said they had been speaking with Litespeed to make the titanium tubing for some of these robotic arms. Kudos to the Brad and the folks at ABG should this all work out.

Just thought I'd share this, as it really does show how respected some bike companies are outside of the bike world.

Not too much of surprize when you consider they started out as a custom ti fab shop before building bikes. Diversifation probably a smart move considering how carbon seems to be the flavor of the week and they certainly can not compete China on production costs.

Litespeed did produce the carbon Pavia in 2006 but not for 2007. They designed the frame but had it produced in Taiwan. Then the frame got copied and a similiar cheaper version is now rebadged by Pedal Force, IBIS and Zemper.

This may be a good thing for Lightspeed as a company, but it isn't necessarily a good thing for the cycling community. Often when a company wins a major government contract, suddenly they lose interest in servicing the private consumer community on which their business was originally built.
It has been rumored that one reason Hooker quit building bicycles was because they needed to concentrate of fulfilling a contract they'd received to build exhaust systems for Shelby Mustangs.

That may have been a case in the past, but watching the experience of others (and how, after they fulfilled that contract, their core business had dried up) one would think that current builders would simply augment existing business rather than replace it (with the contract work).

Just like with carbon companies and formula one racing...when the money is there..it is awesome. But when it dries up...you're stuck trying to stay in business.

With that said, if Litespeed does do this, maybe I can swing them some additional business through many of our contacts (although these guys are a great fit, and it is finite production - as there are only a small amount of robotic arms to be built for an even smaller number of vehicles using them)

It is indeed Kudos to the awesome artisan crew that works at Litespeed, as there is really no one else who has as much titanium material and titanium forming expertise. The press release is going out sometime soon I believe, but of course because of dealing with government agencies such as JPL (Jet Propulsion Labs), all this stuff has to be handled very carefully.

Yes, Litespeed was originally a builder of nuclear titanium vessels.
