IM AZ- Activities for supporters pre/post race?
Hi there

Just looking at IM options for next year and one important criteria is that there are things to do for family (wife and 4 yr old) post race. we will be travelling from Australia so we will make a holiday out of it.

What is there for the family to do in/around AZ? Happy to travel a bit (ie Las Vegas etc) and have a few weeks.

Also, when does registration fill up/sell out?

Stay at a nice place in Tempe or Scottsdale with a good pool and that will make everybody happy. Post race, Sedona is a must-see. If you hit the Grand Canyon you can keep heading north into Utah for Bryce Canyon (amazing) or Zion National Park. Would also suggest Las Vegas and maybe a jaunt over to Southern California if you feel like driving that much.

I second the Sedona trip. It is beautiful up there. Also someone on slowtwitch, I believe it is Zipp, has a bed and breakfast there. Sedona is absolutely beautiful.

check distances...things like the grand canyon are pretty far away...might as well hop a flight to san fran as drive to many of the suggestions...unless it is a car trip you are looking for, then that is cool, but the distances in that part of the country are pretty big and you will be spending a lot of time in the car.

Just a thought, but you could do a big loop drive that would allow you to see a few things....Drive from Phoenix/Temp to Palm Springs, CA which would be a good place to recover for a few days after the race. That's about a 4 hour drive. From there you could drive to San Diego (~3 hours), then up to Los Angeles (~2 hours), then out to Las Vegas (not sure exactly but not more than a few hours), then on to the Grand Canyon.

Each of those drives would be reasonable on their own, and it would give you a good taste of the region. If you are travelling with younger kids, there would be lots to do in San Diego.

In an around Phoenix - everyone mentioned Sedona, which is very nice. Grand Canyon is worth the drive IF you can do something like hike in, etc.
