My kid has raced most of the National Circuit "A" events. If you can provide information regarding what type of event you are interested in, I think will be able to help you.

Best wishes,

Sergio

Gracias to both of you. I am interested in half iron and olympic distances with elite/age group level of competition. I am not itu, but competitive as an age grouper. locations that are easy to get to are preferred - resort areas perhaps, puerto vallarta etc.

I think that the events that fit your wishes are:

April 21, Gran Triatlón Pacífico (Olympic) in Mazatlan (in my hometown) http://www.maraton.org/: Not too expensive. Nice beaches in a tourist town. Very well organized and an ITU World Cup event. Hunter Kemper, Andy Potts and Vanessa Fernandes will be here again this year, I am pretty sure. Apparently you can not register yet as the 2007 site is not open. http://www.maraton.org/

May 12, Triatlón Ixtapa (Olympic) in Ixtapa - Zihuatanejo http://www.asdeporte.com/...62/TriRutaIxtapa.jpg : Not too expensive. Nice tourist town. Not for triathletes that do not like swimming in the ocean as in some years you have to battle big waves. It is the only "A" spot where mexican kids up to the 12-13 y/o AG swim in a pool and not in the ocean... and for a very good reason. You can register now at http://www.asdeporte.com.

November 3, Triatlón Cancún (Olympic) in Cancún, Quintana Roo. ITU World Cup. More expensive than the former. The nicest tourist town of the three with beautiful beaches. Mayan pyramids close and lots to do. You can register (in a few more weeks) at http://www.asdeporte.com.

Hope this helps,

Sergio

I forgot to mention that Ixtapa is not am ITU World Cup event like the other two, but an ITU Pan American Cup.

Great info Sergio - thank you very much. have you done much road riding in the Puerto vallarta area? If so, are there quiet and safe routes to ride? We just bought a place there and am interested in the possibility of training there while on holidays ( currently we just run and swim and have not brought our bikes along). How is the riding around Mazatlan? I am more worried about traffic when travelling than when at home. Lack of familiarity I guess.

GC - that tri-mapper is awesome! what a great little tool.

My experience with PV has been more related to fishing http://vallartafish.8m.com/page14.html and a couple of times when my kids raced in Nuevo Vallarta. I have been there many times but frankly my mind was not focused on checking out cycling routes. I think that in Nuevo Vallarta, where the hotels are might be a good place because there is less trafic.

In Mazatlan I consider risky cycling in the city. I would not recommend it unless you know the areas. You can ride relatively safer in "Avenida Cerritos" in the north area and in the road that takes you from the Mazagua water park (or from Emerald Bay Hotel) to the International Highway (the old two lane highway). We call it "la carretera al Habal". My kid rides five or six times a week on that road and there is always a car behind taking care of them. If you decide to come I will gladly show you the area and you can ride with them.

The good thing about the "carretera al Habal" road is that most drivers are expecting to find cyclists on that road.

Using Google Earth helps a lot. I do not know about the resolution for PV but for Mazatlan is good enough to get an idea of the roads.

Send me a PM and I will give you my cell phone number, just in case.

Best wishes,

Sergio

Got it.

If you like roosterfishing you might enjoy this one from MZT. The kids did the filming and editing and I did the fishing :)

The Baja 70.3 in Ensenada is easy to get to and was fairly well run last year. They should have some of the bugs worked out this year. June 10.
