UBC triathlon: T1 advice please
Hi. I have a question for anyone who's done the UBC triathlon here in Vancouver in the past.

I'm doing this race next week. It'll be the first time I've done a tri that's a pool swim instead of an open-water swim . . . and it'll be the first time I've done a tri this early in the season!

Here's the question: Do most people come out of the pool and head to the change tents to do a full change before getting on the bike, or do most people just throw on cycling clothes over their wet swimsuit and go?

It'll be cold -- probably about 7 degrees Celsius -- and the wind, she blows strong out there.

Doing a full change takes more time, but racing in a wet swimsuit in 7 Celsius isn't appealing.

There's no way I'll even get near the podium, but because I'm slow, every minute counts!

If you've done this race in the past, what was your choice: full change . . . or wet swimsuit?

Thanks for any replies!

I lived in Vancouver for 10 years, but never did the UBC Triathlon. Great race, but I thought that it was a particularly barbaric affair. Getting out of a nice warm pool to then ride in 5C, wind and often rain, is not my idea of a fun morning.

Best wishes.

Barbaric? You bet!

But on the upside, it really got me motivated to crank up my training early in the season and lose the Christmas poundage . . .

It all depends on how motivated you are to do well. If you are pedalling at 19mph on the bike, you better get some warmer clothes.

But if you have been training hard and in the current weather situation we have in vancouver, you are more than ready to go.

I have done the race many times over the years and this is what has worked for me.

As you know it will be wet and cold most likely. The first time I did the race, I ran down to transition in runners. If you do not mind running it bare feet, I would do that. It is really hard to jump out of the pool and get your wet feet into your shoes. I find it easier to get wet feet into cycling shoes so I would just run bare foot.

I put on a long sleeve shirt on while I am running down to transition and when I get there, if it is raining put on a vest for the ride and full finger gloves. If it is not raining, I just rode with the long sleeve and gloves.

I race in longer tri shorts and never find it too cold on the bike. Just me.

If I was you, if you can just throw on a pair of cycling shorts in the tent and do the above, you should have a faster transition.

Thanks, ancientdude and Bman.

I've done all my training for this race outside in the lovely Vancouver weather, which means that for the last 10 weeks or so, I've trained soaking wet.

So I guess that's my answer! It'll more than likely rain on race day, and by the time I'm 5 minutes into the bike, I'll be soaked anyway!

So I guess at T1 I'll just throw on an extra layer, put on the vest and full-finger gloves, and go!

Cheers for now, and thanks again!

good luck, and it really depends from how much you want to suffer from the bike :) I've seen folks doing the bike/run in the same one-piece tri-suit they swam into (yikes), when I did that in my first year it was snowing and 0C so I changed completely in the tent, which took forever (putting stuff on when you're wet and cold is not fun). Last time I did ubc it was a bit warmer (5-6C and no rain) so I ended up swimming in my tri-suit, and putting on tights & jersey in T1.

I suggest to bring a complete change of clothes with you just in case, and depending on the exact weather figure out on race morning what to put in the T1 bag.

I have a few friends doing the race so I might come out and watch. Let me know what your race number is or what your bike looks like and I will see if I can catch you on the bike at some time.

Thanks, Bman.

I'd be embarassed to describe my bike (it's kinda lame -- no bike porn here), but I'll let you know the race #.

Cheers.

Hey, we're in the same "lame bike" boat; the new ride didn't get ordered in time so the 20th century steel beater it is!

I'll be doing the Oly distance for the first time, I was thinking just swimming it in tri-shorts (can't get a hold of a 1-piece), then long-sleeve top and gloves on the bike, as well as a really thin toque if it's cold. Between sweat and rain it'll be wet either way, so I'm opting for warm over waterproof (within reason).

I'm really hoping for sun on the bike, then rain on the run! Running in Vancouver rain, even in March, is one of those beautiful things in life.

Oh god, fond memories... NOT! I have done this race many times, including the years it snowed. Yes, snowed. For that race I would usually swim in my tri shorts & sports bra, then put on a long sleeve jersey, wind-block vest, full gloves, woolieboolie socks, shoes. Putting on a sports bra wet sucks ass, it is an exercise in frustration. If you really want to be warm and take the bra/swim top off, I suggest you use a sports bra that is like a traditional bra (clasps in the back or even in the front - but not a pull-over bra). One year I did put on tights for the ride.

Edit: I second the run to your bike in bare feet. major pain in the butt to get those runners on.

Do you know if we're allowed to duct tape helmets after they've been safety-checked? I train with a duct taped helmet and it makes an incredible temperature difference. Did the same to the bike shoes last year (raced the Duathlon). I find if you can keep the head, fingers and toes warm, you're laughing.

I swim in my cycling shorts and a swim suit, just so I don't have to put on shorts over wet legs and bum. I will be doing the same thing again this year with the UBC race. I'm going to have a little towel, shirt and possible rain jacket and pants (just incase it's allready cold) But I will probable ride with my white long sleeve sugoi hoodie, a tri top over top so I have the pockets (you never know if you'll need them) and shorts and gloves. Managed like this before and had no problems with it. I am putting my flip flops in my dry bag so I can run to the bike and not hurt my feet.
The weather can't be to bad. My heat is at 7:30 and hopefully like everyother Sunday the rain won't start until after I am home and had my shower allready.

Good luck and have fun

Lana

Swimsuit all the way for me - I didn't notice the cold at all.

I just made sure to have lots of stuff to bundle up in after the race when I WAS really cold standing around watching for friends.

I've always raced with clear packing taped vents in winter and nobody ever said anything about it when my helmet was checked.

I've done the race a couple of times and will be racing again this year, I always wear my tri shorts in the pool and don't change them, and throw on a long sleeve shirt in the change tent or on the way to T1. I didn't do the race the year it snowed, but I think I would have still worn shorts and put on a vest, toque under my helmet, and gloves... Fortunately it has been dry both times previous, but I don't know about this year!

I've been keeping one eye on the Weather Network's website, and the forecast doesn't look good for this year's race . . . rain, rain, rain. :-)
