Doesn't everybody?

Except Grant and his buddies over at Rivendell, that is...

Friction - easier for me to swap out wheels and I'm just used to it.

Of all the people I know who ride, I'm the only one who doesn't have it set to index, so if there's others I'd be interested why.

I believe there is a category I would call index-friction.

Mine is index but I would classify my shifting on them as index-friction. It is set on index to click through the gears on the back but due to wear and tear and tuning, I've always got that little tiny movement between the gears, which the click just doesn't make for me: to get it in the exact correct gear, I want.

And then after four months, I would say, and just letting it completely go to shit, it would be friction-index. All friction with some clicking.

I'm only truly "index" for about 2 weeks after I rewire and tighten the screws and adjust the rear derailleur.

Friction all the way. Index shifting is (in my opinion) like buying a sports car with automatic shifting - crazy. I like to tweak things.

Friction on my TT bikes. The only thing I index is STI.

Nope. Not when you are running old 8-speed shifters on a 10-speed set of cogs.

NO. I was 8 spd then read CDW's posts over a year ago about upgrading to 10 spd and using 8 spd shifter on friction. On a 100 mi training ride with 8 spd I tried friction for a few hours. Went back to index during ride and hated it. Finished ride friction and been friction since. $100 got me a durace 10 chain and 105 cassette and then I was loving the extra two gears in the middle.

Glad to see others out there. Really with ten speed especially, friction is very easy. I think that the closer the gears the easier friction works. Jockey wheels on RD move laterally a bit and automatically fine tune the shift.

Friction, always. I find it to be more precise and faster.

Friction. I'm actually using 7 speed down-tube shifters that I have installed on my old bar-end bodies. It was supposed to be a temporary fix but it works so well I have not bothered to replace them.

I had a problem with my index shifting in a race this year so I switched it over to friction and liked it. I still use the index but maybe I'll try friction in training.....I might like it better.

Both TT bikes with barcons are in friction mode. My sister-in-law's TT bike, which I've had occasion to race, has those cool old TT gripshifts in index mode and I like them a lot.
