Well, I am thinking of starting a website. So I figure I would ask the experts on Slowtwitch, whats a good (inexpensive) webhosting company?

Me too. I'm going to dump my current company. Poor service and high cost.

my geek likes webonce.com, a little more expensive than godaddy.com but apparently better behind the scenes. I just follow what she tells me.

Depends upon your needs for future use as well.

As a web designer whose clients often times want to edit their web site on their own, I have used Yahoo. What I like about them is their ease of use, ease of upgrade if needed, customer support.

I used Yahoo for a couple of Pro triathlete sites. The athletes themselves wanted to edit the content of the site from many places around the globe. Using Yahoo, I could design in Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, etc...upload my files, and then at a later point, a client can edit the content via Yahoo's editor online. All they need is internet access, a browser (mac or pc is good) and they can edit from anywhere in the world. They don't need any fancy software to edit their site.

I maintained a website for my kids' swim team and used this company http://www.thinkhost.com/ and can recommend them. Easy to work with if you are using Frontpage etc, I never tried to use any of their templates or creation wizards so I don't know how they score if need that stuff. My wife has a website hosted by godaddy.com. It's a few bucks per month cheaper but not quite as easy in terms of accessing account info, email etc.

If you are just uploading a site you have created yourself, reputable hosting services are all pretty much the same (until you get into mega bandwidth or e-commerce). The differences show up when you have to go into their site for account info, help etc. The biggest difference at the consumer end among the "good" companies seems to be how easy they make it for you to use their tools to create a stock site and how good those tools are so if that is what you need, focus on that.

I use ICDSoft, www.icdsoft.com

It's something like $5 per month -- I use them for several web pages. Rock solid and tech support is great; I don't think I've ever waited longer than 15-30 min for an email reply to a question.

Thanks

I second ICDSOFT.COM.

Cheap. Large bandwidth and storage for a personal page. But the price went up last year.

I paid a whopping $25 for domain name registration and a year of hosting (linux) on a shared Pronet (http://www.pronethosting.com) server. It's more than enough for my needs.
