how significant was maccas move
I was getting half assed updates, far from real time, but from the sound of things, around mile 20-21 he dropped major time.

does anyone know how fast his pace dropped down to or was it a combo of stadler falling off a bit? the race reports on IM live made it sound like he hit 5:20 pace or something. regardless, 2:46 is simply stellar. really wanted macca to pull it out.

5:20 pace per mile you mean. No, he wasn't running that fast. Remember, even a 7 min/mile pace (average) for an IM is a top 5% run pace. A 6:30/mile pace gets you one of the best splits of the day. He likely dropped down to around a 5:45 -6:00 min/mile (which at that time of the race/heat IS truly moving). Stadler looked like he was suffering along at a 7:00/mile pace or so towards the end.

It looked to me like Macca was running his race and counting on Norman blowing up. When it became apparent that that wouldn't happen. Macca dropped the hammer and tried to catch him, and just ran out of real estate. They both ran great races; Norman's was just a little over a minute Greater!
