What's up with Ironman Groupies?

Curious to know how many people travel a significant distance to go watch an ironman race, other than to root for a family member or a loved one.

A shitload. Especially those who have good friends racing.

It's more like a family reunion or convention. And hell, it's friggin HAWAII for a week. Hot and sunny or cold, crappy weather--that's a no brainer.

Drove 5 hours to watch IMCdA in June to cheer on a friend. Spent two nights there...

That isn't quite groupie like behaviour, that's a dedicated friend.

I am talking about people who all met people because of their groupie like behaviour and then travel around because of that. Like a groupie for a rock band.

Well, I went to Kona in 04 with my girlfriend (she was racing), and i've traveled a few times this year to new paltz (2 hours) to watch races. I do it for friends, to meet people, and make contacts, and because if i haven't raced in a while it reminds me what i'm missing.
